Type 1 It's so unfair

Hi,

Seeking support after a suboptimal HbA1c today.

Diagnosed with LADA 12 years ago. On Tslim pump with dexacom CGM for 2 years running novorapid.

My HbA1c was 65 today down from 88 last time. I was hoping for 48 or less. I am so gutted as I have been working so hard on my control. I only allow myself to eat once daily and then try to stick to a simple salad. I am in range 89% of the time and otherwise running low yet my HbA1c is still so high. I tolerate mild hypo's to avoid extra carbs and only treat when I am below 3. I also tried metformin as I am a fat type 1. It makes me feel awful and hasn't helped with my control. I have lost 18kg over the last 3months and was hoping I would be rewarded with a decent result.

Not sure what else I can do. I will cut out high carb salad foods such as tomatoes and beetroot. This will push me into keto territory which has to help. Any suggestions would really help- just wish my diabetes would be reasonable and reflect how hard I am working on it.

This seems odd. A hba1c of 65 us associated with an average blood glucose of about 10.3, so something seems to be off.
Have you double checked your Dexcom numbers occasionally with a fingerprick to see if the Dexcom is right?

There are several medical conditions which distort hba1c results, eg anaemia. But as @Antje77 suggested, I'd first do a few spot checks to see of your dexcom is reading accurately.

I generally find the dexcom guess at hba1c to be reasonable (via the clarity app). You could ask your clinic for a fructosamine test if you think the hba1c is inaccurate. What did they say about the disparity between the hba1c and the dexcom readings?

And welcome to the forums @VickyMitchell , I just noticed that this was your first post/thread.

Hi, welcome.

Well that really isn’t fair :( You are trying so hard and not achieving your goals, you deserve better results.

But! You are doing amazing! That’s a huge drop in numbers, massive weight loss! I think you are being hard on yourself, expecting too much.

You sound pretty amazing. Well done.
