Unles you are overweight, you don't need to worry too much about calories. what you do need to know is what is your blood glucose doing?
did your doctor give you a blood glucose meter?
Mostly they don't and they tell you you don't need to test. this is just money saving rubbish. Pester them until they give you one and a prescription for test strips. diagnosing you and leaving you to sink or swim is unforgiveable!
In the meantime, read any threads on this forum which refer to newbies and eat, meat, fish, cheese and eggs and vegetables either cooked or salads. The most likely thing is that when you do get to see the clinic, they will give you some very out-of-date advice about eating complex carbohydrates with every meal. They might even warn you off groups like us.
Just think!
We live with diabetes 24/7. they don't! WE have our own inteests at heart at the same time as wanting to help other people. Most of us here have discovered that severely restricting our carbohydrate intake helps us to keep our blood glucose on target.
I'm telling you this when you may not even know what a carbohydrate is.
Dr. Lois Jovanovic, famous diabetes specialist, of California advises her patients to leave out White foods.
In other words, No bread, pasta, rice or potatoes, or parsnips. Cauliflower is OK!
Meat fish, egs an cheese and veggies will be fine. It doesn't mwtter ow you cook them. A traditional fried English breakfast is fine for a T2 diabetic, so long as you leave out the toast and the baked beans.
I hope this ramble is some help to you. come back to us when you know more.

Hi, Jenny. The simple rule to get your diet going is to cut out sugary things, & to cut down to 1/3 all carbohydrates - bread, potatoes, rice, etc. Plenty of protein & veg is OK. Drink no-added-sugar squash, not fruit juices (they're 10% sugar.) Nuts, cold meats & cheese are generally a safe snack. No biscuits.

When you've got figures, post them & you will get more personal advice. There are all sorts of things to take into account, but you've got plenty of time to adapt your lifestyle.

It is a shock to find you have a life changing condition, but hopefully you will find the changes forced by diabetes will make a healthier you. I came out of the Dr in a state of shock 8 years ago. Now at 69 I can still play a good game of tennis against much younger people. Low carbohydrate advice on this forum has reversed a condition that affected my mobility.

Regards,

Ian

I agree with the above, I am T2 - diagnosed a month ago - I did the nurses advice for 2 weeks and couldn't understand my blood test results still being high - although I was losing weight - my results 2hours after food were around 12 - now after food they are more like 6 - 9 which is much more acceptable. What you need to do is have a look at your results at the moment and then change your diet and see what they are then.... make your OWN mind up about what you think is best for you.

I cheated the other day because I was sick of no pasta ( I am trying to lose weight so I have to keep my carbs even lower than those people who don't want to lose any ) and I felt awful afterwards and my bloods were at 11.9.... I therefore have no choice if I want to remain unmedicated for my diabetes.
