Don't worry, Hevab - I've never had a diabetic symptom in my life! Like me, you seem to have been caught early, and you should be able to get control quite easily just by diet and exercise. I take Metformin too, but I'm happy to do that because they lessen insulin resistance, can help you lose weight, and give some protection against heart disease and stroke.

I take it you've been to see the diabetic specialist GP in your usual practice. We have one too - unfortunately it's the GP I get on with least well  I go to my usual one instead, for my test results etc. Have your test and go back and see what the GP says.

You may be just pre-diabetic, you may be fully Type 2, but whatever happens, you've had a warning. Even if you're not yet, there is a strong possibility that you could become diabetic if you don't take care of yourself and alter your lifestyle.

If the doc say you are not diabetic, don't forget to ask him about the yeast infections and what does he thing is causing those, if it's not high blood sugars? You don't want to be back where you started.

Good luck! :D

Sounds like you are diabetic if over 6.4% on the A1C test. Diabetes is just a number but you do have insulin resistance at these levels. I'm just a nutritionist and not a doctor, but what you need to do is change your diet and get daily exercise to lower your insulin resistance. A new book that is very helpful is called "The Glycemic Load Diet." Also you can get a little book on the glycemc index and loads of 800 foods. This is the best to take shopping with you, or if you eat out it can really help with your food choices. Sugar isn't the most important thing, it's the starches as you will see in these books.

Eat green leafy vegies, some fruit, nuts, seeds, some dairy - only full fat, some low carb yogurt, and plenty of sea food and fish. Cut out all starches (bread, rice, potatoes, etc.) and high saturated fat meats like chicken and red meat. Chicken has more cholesterol than 15% fat hamburger! So eat low glycemic and low fat, except for dairy. Full fat dairy has been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes by up to 60%. Change out bad fats (saturated) for omega 3 fats. Try to walk 30 minutes every day to increase your inulin sensitivity.

found your comments very interesting, I'm newly diagnosed as well and have been searching for info on what is the best way to eat, eg, carbs, fats, protien etc etc. I am amazed that after reading alot about eating breads, pasta, rice etc it would appear that these foods are not necessarily the best foods to be eating.

So you are a nutritionist and you obviously know what is best.

I have type 2, thanks for the input above, very helpful. :?

Lots of good advice there, although I don't necessarily agree with it all - we're all different I guess! As a type 2 on diet only, I concentrate purely on getting my BG right. As a result, I certainly avoid starchy carbs and reduce my intake to about 150 to 180 grams of low GI carbs a day. However, I eat plenty of chicken and a fair bit of red meat. I probably also eat more saturated fats than before diagnosis - when you cut some things out, others take there place. Nonetheless, during the period, my cholesterol level has dropped from 5.5 to 3.8 with NO extra meds to cause this. Also, blood pressure down, pulse recovery rate much improved and many other benefits.
Agree with Roberts exercise too, although I do 10 mins only of high impact exercise on an exercise machine about an hour after eating when I know my BG will be peaking testing has showed it brings it down much quicker and lower. That's not to say I don't do other normal exercise during the day.

Think it refers to 15% fat component.

Meant to say as well Hevab, go easy on the fruit. Some is good, but it all has carbs and some is better than others. Lots of us can't handle bananas - high in carbs and high GI, particularly so the riper they are
