Diabetes
4 weeks ago I was put on Trulicity, I was very weary of it as a) I hate injection and b) I was unsure about the listed side affects. In the end I went ahead with injecting (once a week) the medication until tonight. I normally inject in the leg (there no way I could inject my stomach and somebody else has to do your arm). But tonight I just sat there with the pen pressed on my leg and I could not bring my self to press the trigger, I now fill absolutely ****.

I so need to do something to get my diabetes sorted I really wanted this to work but now I feel like a total wuss, for god sake I am 59. There are load of people worse off than me that have to inject several times a day otherwise they won't have a life and here is me unable to do it once a week.

At the moment I Just don't know what to do..........................

Don’t be too hard on yourself, yes others maybe a lot worse off but at the moment you have something you are finding difficult to deal with. Maybe time for a review with your health care team to let them know you are struggling?
Have you tried different diets for your diabetes? Let us know a little about what you eat, maybe adjusting your diet will mean you could manage without the injections?

Hi Rachox, don't know if I am being hard on myself or not but just feel so stupid over the issue. I am due a review in June. looks like it will be a bit early. I was intending to call the diabetes nurse today but I did not have chance.

I am eating less, way less than I used to eat and eating sensibly, trying to keep the carb & fat intake down, trying to cut out bread to just a max of 4 slices a week (and that is normally brown whole grain style bread) trying to have smaller portions. One issue I have is that I have a small range of food, I don't like a lot of different vegetables.

Went of a refresher course earlier in the year which is where I found out about Trulicity. I know the one big area for me is exercise and it is something I am trying to correct that but at present it is just not happening. I really wish I knew the answer

Are you struggling because you are hungry? Sensibly according to who? If you cut carbs (great idea) then you still need energy and doing low fat at the same time is likely to leave you hungry. Fat really isn’t the demon it’s been made out to be and doesn’t have to be excessive , just not low.

I don't like many veggies either. It really isn't necessary to eat them. I eat mainly mushrooms and tomatoes (OK they are a fruit), some peas and that's about it apart from my Sunday roast. I never eat salad veggies. But I low carb with high fat very successfully. Do you eat meat and fish? What about dairy foods? Shell fish? Nuts? Avocado? Salmon and tuna?

Why are you keeping your fat intake down? Do you have another medical issue? Eating low carb really demands an increase in good fats. Trying to eat low carb and low fat will not work.

Tell us which foods you like, which you don't, and maybe we can help keep you off those injections. What is a typical day's food for you?

OK let me rephrase, I don't stuff my face with McDonald, KFC, biscuits, fizzy drink etc. I try to eat sensible food and sensible amounts, obviously some part of my sensible eating is not working.

I am a stress eater, when stressed I eat. I have been known to eat an entire (big) packet of chocolate digestive biscuits.

Here is a list of the foods I will eat (attached), no way is it the complete list but covers the marjority of what I eat . I miss bread, and have yet to find a replacement, I have tried various crispbreads etc. tried Bergen bread and those GI rolls from Lidls but have found that bread is just a weight around my waist hence the reason I only have a couple of slices a week. I also find it difficult to have an evening meal that does not include potato (unless I am having rice).

On the upside I managed to get to drop into the doctors on the way home and have left a message for the diabetes nurse to contact me and then see where thing go from there.

I wasn’t suggesting you were or should stuff fast food. Sensible accordingly to many sources includes a lot of carbs which are absolutely not good for a type 2 diabetic. I’ll add a few links that describe what works for many of us. Fundamentally it’s low carbs, for some of us very low. Then to counteract the loss of energy from these we increase fats which don’t effect blood sugars. Once blood sugars are under control the weight almost always follows.

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog/jokalsbeek.401801/ for info including low carb made simple

And https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/success-stories-and-testimonials.43/ to show it really works and for motivation

and https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today.75781/ for food ideas

also https://www.dietdoctor.com/ for more food ideas and general info of carb content of foods. Lots of other websites for recipes out there too. Just use the term low carb or keto with whatever you fancy.

Also it’s very important to be able to check for yourself what’s happening so you can make the necessary adjustments day to day and meal by meal rather than wait 3,6 or even 12 months and then have no idea what had what effect. So using a blood glucose meter is essential to see what each meal does to your levels. Which brings me to my final point of needing to monitor levels closely when on meds such as yours and coordinate with your dr to keep your meds at appropriate levels.

IMPORTANT FOR ANYONE ON MEDS CONSIDERING LOWERING CARBS: if you lower your carbs then any glucose lowering meds may need to be adjusted accordingly to make sure you aren’t taking more than your new diet requires. It can cause a hypo if you have more gliclazide or insulin etc (this is not relevant for metformin on its own) than your new carb intake requires. Keep a close eye on your numbers and ideally do this with your dr. Please don’t be put off by an ill informed out dated rubbishing of low carb diets or being told you should eat carbs to match meds, it should be the other way around.

For some reason I can’t open your attachment. Rice can be every bit as bad if not worse for some diabetics. Rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, cereals, oats, grains are the most common things that need ditching or seriously limiting. Generally I drop the potato (or rice or pasta) and have more of the meat and veg. The plate looks a little odd to begin with but you soon get used to it..

If you are genuinely serious about controlling your diabetes, you need a total re-think on your dietary choices. I would estimate half of the foods on your list are causing you problems, maybe more than half. I have extracted the ones that caught my eye.
Potatoes, rice (any colour), bread (any colour), pasta, breakfast cereals, pastry, batter, most fruits, legumes (beans), anything made with normal flour, and anything in a packet that contains more than 5 to 10% carbs. These are the worst offenders. What I do not see on your list is any dairy apart from cheese. What about butter, full fat Greek yogurt, cream?

Potato Boiled (new only), baked, roasted, Rossties
Carrot Raw, boiled
Pea’s Gareden or Marrow
Baked Beans (low Sugar)
Rice Brown
Sweetcorn Tinned or fresh
Beans
Bean Sprouts
Runner beans
French\Dwarf Beans
Butter bean

Apple
Orange
Grapes
