Hi,

some advice please. During a routine blood test my sugar levels were at 7.2 and on a follow up they were at 6.8 after a 14 hour fast.

Since then I have been monitoring my own blood using a monitor I bought some time ago when I was told I was borderline diabetic (??)

My blood sugar level has been between 9 and 12 for the last month, but I was told my by GP that as they were lower than 20 I should not be worried. I was referred to a diabetes nurse who took my blood sugar levels and it read 8.2 and again I was told that they are too low to be worried about...

I have a lot of other symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes, but these could also be associated with something else too (head aches, blurred vision, constant urination)

Should I go and get a second opinion?

My meter manual said not to be worried by the odd reading around 11 but see a doctor if it was frequently above 11.

The people who do the research argue:

"This study showed that a mean weight loss of 11 kg decreased fasting blood glucose levels from 10.4 to 7.0 mmol/L but that this abnormal level presaged the all-too-familiar deterioration of control."

In other words, over time, levels between 7 and 10 will eventually lead to deteriorating control. This time last year I was between 9 and 11. Now I am between 4 and 6 and feel very much better for it.

I'm afraid your GP is wrong about the 20mmol; badly wrong. He/she needs to have a look at the NICE Diabetes Pathways document (Google it) which he/she is supposed to follow. If your blood sugar levels 2 hours after a typical meal are above 8-9 mmol then you are probably diabetic. If your 2-hour levels are going above 9mmol'ish then you need to insist that your nurse arranges a GTT test or HBa1C. It's probably not worth seeing that GP again ref diabetes. BTW, a fasting test is not the best way of diagnosing diabetes due to overnight liver dumps.

Hi EliPearson

I suspect your GP wants to do nothing until its too late...a worrying tale indeed. Do let us know your result on Monday. Perhaps this might be a good time to reflect on your diet/lifestyle and to start planning some changes should the news be bad. If on Monday, the HbA1c still shows IFG, then this is your chance to take control and reverse things. If the result comes back showing you are diabetic, then it's not the end of the world providing you stick to a rigorous diet and take exercise etc. You will find more info on this forum than probably what a diabetic nurse will ever tell you and personally, I have learnt so much here myself. Hope all turns out for the best
