Hello,

Hope we all well.

I know Friday is ment to be fish for supper, but I like to eat in on Mondays as well. lol

Anyway, I have been to the fish & chip (no chips for me) shop.

I had 2 lightly battered fish with mushy peas and 1 jumbo sausage.

Started eating at 8:35
Tested at 9:35 - 8.6%
Tested at 10:35 = 6.5%

Any views?

Cheers

I have been diagnosed type 2 for 5 years but still don't understand everything. Those results you show - my surgery would say they were completely acceptable and normal. Reading all the comments most would disagree and say they were worrying. My diabetes nurse always says if they are under 10 that is fine and I have always stuck to that so to me the results look good. Will be interested in other replies.

Hi simply_h :) Those results look reasonable to me. It would have been useful if you had tested before you started eating as well. Then if the before and 2 hours after readings are fairly similar it means the meal was OK for you. With the batter and the mushypeas (and maybe bread in the sausage) you had quite a few carbs in there. Bet it was nice

Blimey, 2 pieces of fish AND a sausage, even without chips that's a huge meal and load of calories & fat! Not implying anything about anyone else's weight, but even as a normal BMI adult, even after a 5 hour running / cycling endurance race, I couldn't eat that much in one sitting!

There's a lot of fat in that meal and this may have had a delayed effect on your bg, perhaps a reading taken 4/5 hours after eating would have been useful here and one to consider in the future.

Wow that' a big dinner! - I envy you the mushy peas though - I can do a small battered fish with half the batter removed and a few chips but just can't take the mushy peas.

Nigel is right - for me if I was able to eat that much I would probably have the same results as you at those times - but about 4 hrs in would see a rise again and would be almost certainly be in double figures for quite a while. I found this out soon after diagnosis when intensive testing to see what I could and couldn't eat - lots of things I ate which were ok at 2hrs bacame a no no at 3, 4, and 5 hours.

But it sounds like you enjoyed it and if it was a very occasional treat then that's ok - :D

Hi simply h as arleady said a pre meal reading would have been useful, but a couple of things to bear in mind are that battered fish is covered in flour which is high in carbs and chip shop sausages are generally not of a great quality and will probably contain any amount of breadcrumbs as a binder and filler which again will be high in carbs.

So, personally I would not like to see the 8.6 reading you got but I wouldnt be too concerned by the 2 hour 6.5 reading although lower is always better :D

If you are happy with those numbers then fine, many diabetics would love to see them but personally I would stick to one piece of fish and a few chips and give chip shop sausages a wide berth :D

Edit: Good points by Nigel and lovinglife, I hadnt considered the delayed stomach emptying due to the high fat level of fried food, a higher level later on would not be unlikely.

Hello All,

I have just been reading all your replies - Thank you for the replies.

Just it say it was nice and I have that every Monday, as I decided a few weeks ago to give myself some slack.. :-)

I know some of you think thats a lot of food, but I love my food and I guess to eat a lot, BUT I only have 2 meals a day, I can't face any more really.

I am sorry I did forget to test before I ate.. I am around 5% to 6% in the evening.

But what was interesting, that I will have to do again next week is test at 3 hours and 4 hours, to see what my results are then.

So untill next week.

cheers

Hi,

Personally I envy all those people who talk about 3 hour, 4 hour and maybe 5 hour after eating tests.

I'm lucky if I haven't eaten anything else after 3 hours! :) :) :)

More seriously.....

I thought little and often was the way to go. That means at least a small snack of some kind for me after 3 hours.

Hey Doug,

I guess it is, but I love my food and find that 2 large meals a day is fab for me, as I have always been like the follow.

Large Dinner @ Dinner time
Large Tea @ Tea time (always before 8pm)

And a very small snack if I fancy one later etc.

But this is only me.

Cheers
