In a 2009 survey, a third of the DSNs were on short term contracts. Over half of them had no protected study time, and only 15% a protected budget for any training.

There isn't a formal training curriculum either so some may be very well qualified, others much less so. There is a framework of competences, not sure of it's official standing.

This is the crux of the matter isn't it? Between this and the other thread about DSN's
It becomes very apparent that there is no one definition of a DSN in the local Practice.

As so much is now entrusted to them - GP's often washing thie hands of any responsibility
for diabetes management and the hospitals referring patients back to their local practices then
there obcviously needs to be some standardisation.
It is no wonder that patients lack confidence in these nurses and it is most unfair to the nurses themselves if they are required to assume responsibilities which used to belong o the GP withoout the proper training.

Many patients and nurses are being sold short. I am very surprised that the whole business has not been challenged by someone somewhere. The Nursing Unions perhaps?
 
id go with the strips we have some fab dsns but if it was a choice between them and the strips the strips show me alot more in whats happening to dylan personally than the dsn ever could. we would be in alot of trouble with no test strips as dylan doesnt seem to know the difference between high and low so we would be treating the wrong end lol
 
i had my 6 month check up this morning with the nurse and she had never heard of tolbutamide that im on, checked her book and she said that since tolbutamide can cause low sugar, im can get the strips on prescription, also got a new meter which is good as my sugar level all over the place, so defianatly strips for me :thumbup:
