Just got meter. Help please.

Hi, I'm a type 1 who carb count. As others have posted, you really need to 'limit' the carbs you eat for each meal. Make a note of what you eat and the meal carbs, do your normal test before the meal and check after 2 hours. If you have enough strips do another test 2 hours later as yoy need to know HOW LONG your tablets take to work on the meal you've eaten. Remember, if you're high BEFORE the meal then you'll be HIGH afterwards. It could mean that your team need to look at your tablets etc. Ask to go on DESMOND as you'll get a lot of info/understanding how to manage YOUR diabetes. Too much of the info given by teams are geared to the NORM BUT we all react differently. I've done DAFNE and I do things to suit ME and it's working.....so far after 6 months and 5 years of hell doing things as a NORM.
Hi I'm booked to go on a diabetes awareness course at end of January so hope that helps. It says it's a STEP course? I'm cutting out carbs as much as possible. Only had a tiny portion of wild rice yesterday . My pre dinner reading was 12.3 and two hours later was 15.3. I sure this is high to you but believe me I've been getting 19 so I feel it's an improvement. Long way to go! But lost another 2lb this week. Take care . Lin

No keep going! Everything is going in a downward direction! Is it possible to swap the rice out for green veggies? Be warned, they will tell you in this course to eat limited amounts of rice, pasta, bread and potatoes with every meal. If you want to do this that's fine but if you don't stick to your guns. Take your meter readings as proof. I would keep a food diary and evidence of weight loss too. I think they are obliged to preach the 1/3 of plate should be starchy carbs. Personally I wouldn't recommend it but it works for some people! Good luck!

Thanks for the advise. Yes I'm realising this. I think this is when I hit a massive wall of depression( easing now, thank god) I remember coming out of the surgery thinking that's ok. Probably explains why I felt so poorly, especially as I had been told my body was not using the thyroxine, you can't last long without!!! I read the info sheets from nurse and it was already as we eat now so I thought hmmm that's a doddlle then, not much changes. Still felt ill on meds, so read everything on here and you all mostly seem to be singing from same hymn sheet ie: low carbs. As desperate to get well and get my vision/ energy back so have started the diet. It's hard as all the things I eat and enjoy. I love to bake, cook so for a while I gave up as down. Also my other hobbies are gardening, have zero energy so that has gone too, love to walk my collie but no stamina so hence the massive depression, lots of tears and tantrums. Calming down a bit now. I seriously think the GPs should warn newbies about this. My poor hubby has had to put up with it all bless him. Married 35 years tomorrow. Don't think all these conditions were in the vows of sickness and health lol!

Forgot to say I'm doing a diary with readings and goods eaten. I had some muesli yesterday and that sent it up. Learning curve!!

Lin, if you are feeling very tired all the time and aren't getting much exposure to sunlight, you might have a Vitamin D deficiency. Definitely worth looking into. Hypothyroid and Vitamin D deficiency were a package deal with my diabetes diagnosis and I couldn't believe how much better I felt once I started on Vitamin D supplements.

I also read the NHS site and panicked as I thought but this is what I eat now! Trust me. Do LCHF strictly for a month and come back and tell us how much weight you've lost and how better your energy levels are! Your husband can eat the same too. Mine has also lost 1 stone 10lbs and he isn't diabetic! Keep going! You can do this!

Thanks. I could buy some. What strength would you recommend?

Lyn do not just take them you need a blood test should check vit D and calcium levels to take without check can be dangerous, esp as you have other problems.

And what ya mean ya carn't bake EISH scroll down the home page to the Low carb forum and loads of recipes there also in the recipes forum although l think that is a bit more of a mixed LCHF and other diet info.

Will do. Just feeling a bit low at the moment, everything seems huge!

Lin, you are going to be fine. We've all been there so post and well reply! Take carex

I had no idea you are supposed to test 2 hours after STARTING to eat. Is that right? Every single test I have done is 2 hours after I have finished eating.

Daft of me not to clarify this really. I am newly diagnosed (obviously).
OOPS. Me too.

yes 2 hours after you start but it does depend on what you eat whether you will be on your way down at that point. Generally you peak about an hour and at 2 you should be going down. Ice cream and some other foods often delay this to 3 hours and there is no sign of a rise at one hour
