Just need some advise

Hi

I just really am asking for some advice.

Around 8-10 weeks ago I went to my GP with what I believed was a fungal infection. After a trip to a sexual health clinic this was diagnosed as simple thrush. At the same time I had a lot of tests for various std which as expected all turned out to be clear.(if you knew me you would find this laughable) I was given a tablet and some cream for thrush. I was also told that I might be allergic to soap and given a cleanser to use.

After 3 weeks it had not gone away so I went to my GP he gave me a stronger cream and it went away but came straight back.

Some one suggested that Thrush can be a sign of diabetes, I don't know if thats true or not. However I thought I would have a look and try and find some information about Diabetes.

Well on this site it asks do you go to the toilet a lot. Well yes I do and have done so for a number of years. I tend to need a pee every 2 hrs. I also drink a lot of water so that might just explain that.

Do I feel tired a lot? Yes but not to the extent that I fall asleep during the day.

Do I have weight swings? Well only if I diet and I am not that keen on that.

Do I have fuzzy vision? Well I had laser surgery to correct short sightedness and all thought I can now see without contracts or glasses I don't think my vision is that great.

I am going to have to go back to the GP with regards to the Thrush, I am just putting it off at the moment. When I am there should I ask to be checked for Diabetes?

I really don't want to wast anyones time and I feel embarrassed posting this, so if this reads like I am just being a time waster please forgive me.

I'd ask for a test. Diabetes, as you can see in the media, is more widespread than you may expect, and if you catch it quick enough it's FAR easier to deal with than if you leave it while your blood sugars get worse and your pancreas deteriorates. You can get a simple finger-prick test while at the docs, which will only give an indication, (although a better indication if you had the test in the morning as early as reasonable, and didn't eat or drink, other than water, for 10 hours before) If the indication is that it's possible, he can then send a sample to the lab (or arrange for you to have a blood test at the hospital) which can confirm one way or the other. Nothing to lose, so if in doubt, get it checked.
 
Hi Alex and welcome to the forum :)

I think it would be a good idea to ask your doctor for blood sugar tests just to know if you have diabetes or not, next time you go. It certainly wouldn't do any harm. That would put your mind at rest. Let us know the outcome.

I went to the GP for thrush a good few months before I was diagnosed. My GP prescribed the usual cream and didn't think to consider diabetes even though I gather thrush is a very common presenting symptom of diabetes. I would certainly ask your GP for a test or even your local pharmacy may offer a free test. I also bought some local cost urine sticks off the web. Although not as good as a blood test meter they showed for months after diagnosis that my urine still had sugar in it.

I had thrush just before diagnosis. I had never had it before in my life but when I told the doctor he just brushed me off and gave me a prescription. He never mentioned diabetes and I didn't know at the time that it was a symptom of diabetes. When I went back to doctor (female this time) as it didn't seem to be clearing up she arranged for a urine test to check for infection. I handed my sample into the surgery in the morning and got a phone call in the afternoon asking me to come in the next morning for a blood test. The next day the nurse advised me that there "was loads of sugar" in my urine and that it would also explain the thrush as that is a very common symptom of diabetes. She said that my blood test was just a formality as it was clear from my urine sample and my symptoms that I had diabetes!

I would advise you to get a blood test just to be on safe side and put your mind at rest.
 
i had thrush for years and was given treatment for 6 weeks i think it was but it allways came back when diagnosed and treated it finally cleared up but i know now when my sugar is high it comes back just cutting back on sugar may help apparently

I just thought I would give you an update, really just incase anyone else have this same sort of issue and is looking for advise.

I went back to the doctors, this time I was seen by a different GP. I explained what had happened so far and I suggested that I maybe should be tested for diabetes. The doctor asked me did I need to get up during the night for a drink, I said no. He then said that it was unlikely that I had diabetes but it was still worth doing a test. However he wanted to have a look at the rash first.

Lots of things have happened but it turns out that I don't have diabetes or thrush. The clinic had misdiagnosed the rash and the doctor on the second visit just took their word for it. What I do have and that is causing the rash are ""pre""-cancerious cells. This is something that is totally treatable. They start with a steroid cream together with another cream, then if that doesn't work drugs and last resort surgery.

The reason I am posting this is simply as information for anyone who thinks (or has been told) they have thrush which won't go away. I would strongly suggest that you go back to your doctor and ask for a diabetes test, if thats negative then there may be other reasons for the rash.
