My message is,
I have been a diabetic type 1 for 43 years and to be honest with you, I am getting so fed up with it. My BG are high nearly all the time. I put extra insulin into my self to level my BG, but I am now putting extra weight on and it is really getting me down. I have tried the low carb diet, but cannot seem to stick to it. Can anyone give me some advice as to what I can do.
Maybe I need to have a talk with my diabetic nurse, but when I do, I feel as if she is no help to me. I hope I can receive some help with advice. Thank you xx

Hi. I suspect you are having too many carbs and must stick to a lower-carb lifestyle if you want to control both blood sugar and weight. Insulin enables the body to use carbs and if there are too many they get stored as fat. What is your typical daily carb total? You probably need to stick below 150gm or less but it varies a lot between individuals and weight gain is one measure. When having lower carbs you need to increase both protein and fats to keep you feeling full.

Hi Kaycee and welcome to the forum.
I'm recently diagnosed type 2 so probably not the best to advise you as you already have so much experience compared to me but I'm sure some one will be along shortly who can help you more.
I've been doing the LCHF diet for only 3 months, I've had to be so strict with myself as I'm a binge eater, especially on carbs and sweet things. It hasn't been too difficult so far but I'm not sure how long I can keep it up at this level. It's definitely a life style change diet and does work if you can stick with it. In 3 months I've lost 1 stone 9lbs so far, got my Hba1c down from 53 - 40 (got the results today) and my Blood sugars seem to range between 5.5 - 7. So from my meager experience it's definitely worth persevering if you can.
I know it must get samey as all diets can but if you can bring yourself to try again and stick with it it just might help.
Good luck
Maggie

When you say diabetes nurse do you mean a Dr's surgery diabetes nurse (DN) or a hospital diabetes specialist nurse (DSN)?

If your under the care of your gp surgery for your diabetes care ask for a referral over to the hospital diabetes clinic, in my experience they are more specialised in dealing with type 1 related issues.
