After completing the Newcastle diet on Sunday(-35lb and Avg BG last 30 days 5.3) I was actually quite worried about the next stage. I have had lots of suggestions and advice from this great forum. In the end I have decided to go LCHF with a daily carb cap of around 50g. As there are quite a few members who have recently completed these diets or will do soon and many on here who have completed them long ago (some before they were "discovered") and with my concern about YO YO effects I have decided to post my weekly results, my HbA1c when it is completed (4 weeks) to keep me honest. I would be delighted if any of you want to utilise the post for the same reasons so we can compare results and get feedback from those who have "been there got the T Shirt"

I still need to lose a further 10-12 kilos to get to a healthy BMI and maintain normal BG levels. This week after the eight weeks I think I would be happy to maintain my weight and then lose 1-2lb over the next 6 weeks. So far this week my BFG each morning have been in the mid to hi 4 range and my weight has been stable

Very well done. Keep up the good work and you should stay in remission.

Well done on maintaining so far.

Whilst you are looking for idea from others and support to keep yourself on-track, it would be also interesting if you would share what you are doing to maintain/slow lose in the meantime too.

Thanks Andbreathe I will do that as I go along.

What a day

BFG 4.5

I have had a sore knee so went to see the quack today. I was pretty nervous as I hadn't told him about the ND or the fact that I dropped my meds two weeks into the diet and was expecting a bit of a tongue lashing. He was amazed by my weight loss and when I showed him my records said it was the right thing to do to drop my metformin with my decreasing BG levels. He had never heard of the ND and drilled me and took notes for some time. I explained that I wanted to do my HbA1c tests in four weeks so it would start from the ND. He insisted I get it straight away and that we could do it again next month (I think he really wanted to see the test more than me) So I will do on Sat Morning and should have results early next week.( and the knee is a touch of arthritis)

Diet is very much keto with carb levels under 50 each day this week.

As I indicated in the intro please fell free to use this post to report on your own Post Newcastle/8 week results as I think it would be great to be able to watch and support each others progress

I will post the test results on here when they come to hand

Great news and a doctor with an open mind to boot. Congratulations you might have made a convert of the doc!

Thanks bulbiker I hope your right. I should have mentioned that I told him I was now setting my own diet and it was much harder and he suggested I could see a diabetic dietitian and I indicated I couldn't really afford that setback

BFG 4.4

I am fasting as I head off for my HbA1c test shortly.

My diet this week has been a moving feast with food selection but the maximum carbs has been 53g with the other days under that. Lots of Eggs,Cheese and Meats. I think is this first week I am so conscious of needing to still loose weight and keep my BG down that I am almost scared of Carbs.

Also following on from the 800 cals a day I have been feeling very full and improved energy. Weigh in tomorrow

Well one week past ND and on LCHF

BFG 4.9
Weight 88.7kg Lost .8 kg (1.7 lbs this week)
Carbs Last Sunday 151g Monday to Saturday all under 52g
Calories around 1300 per day

I am really happy with this first week. To make an adjustment from 800 to 1300 cals a day and still lose weight was very satisfying. Probably the hardest part was selecting a menu that would works for me and that is going to take some weeks to build a template. I am quite patient about that as I believe this template will probably be ongoing. I am pretty simplistic/fussy in my diet choices but luckily love meat and dairy and need to push myself a little more with Veges and Salad

I have felt very full at times and have seen an increase in energy. I have been walking and covering 10000 steps a day but need to refine this and get back into some strength exercise to maintain muscle

Should get my HbA1c results on Tuesday. It will be very interesting given that it will include the eight week ND

Do you really need to fast before a HbA1c ?

Just a question really, although I guess to get accurate Cholesterol readings you should.
Hi britishpub

Correct Cholesterol as well

Hi All
BFG 4.6

Still on the LCHF and cracked the BMI of 30 meaning I am no longer Obese just fat!!

HbA1c results today were great. To put them in context they include eight weeks of the Newcastle diet and four weeks prior to the diet. Its nice to see a doctor smiling and shaking their head at the same time. I have attached a copy of the report for those of you that like to examine the details. I appreciate any feedback as I have never been a details person.

In a nutshell

HbA1c 10.8 to 5.9
HbA1c (IFCC) 95 to 41
Gluc. Fasting 13.3 to 4.7

Also great improvements in Cholesterol

Doctor spent a lot of time going over details of the diet. I suggested he watch the Diabetes discussion on TV tonight in Aussie with Michael Mosley as a guest.

PS. Anyone know how I can correct the spelling of Mosley in the Thread Title

Congratulations on all you've achieved so far.

I've switched to a low carb diet, and although I'm doing OK, this is a big change and after 8 months I'd say I'm still getting new routines sorted out. If I take my time and plan and shop thoughtfully, I'm OK, but I still have times when I stand in the supermarket not knowing what to buy! Old habits (and they were habits which by and large I'd been led to believe were good habits) do hang on in there.

Thanks @JenniferW

The results from the ND were outstanding but it is really important to follow it up with the LCHF. And you are right about meal selection. I am trying to build that template for each meal and then create alternatives. There are great recipes etc on here but I am reasonably plain at taste so need to find what works for me. I have never spent so much time in supermarkets reading labels lol

Hi muzza3
Great news and well done on continuing to loose the pounds after coming off the ND. Agree completely on the label reading and now there are whole aisles of the supermarket I can just walk past and say "nothing there for me". Keep updating us on your progress.. you're an inspiration.
Regards
Mark

This attachment is a copy of advice given re diet etc. Looks like in Australia you are advised even more carbs than I was here in UK.
Were you intending to show your blood test results @muzza3 ?

I appreciate you pointing that out. I was quite happy to post the whole lot as I was interested in feedback. Yes re diet after these results I told my Doctor that my biggest challenge was now to build a new diet based on LCHF. He suggested I see a Diabetic Dietitian I advised him that I couldn't afford that setback
