I have been Keto for over a year and lost weight. I'm within the limit for my height and weight doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the fat I'm carrying. Being unfit at 70 and having had colon cancer, I decided to join a gym and have been going for 3 weeks. I had my body measurements taken and found out my % body fat mass and my body fat mass in kilos. I do fast walking for 30 minutes and then use the weight strength machines for another 30 minutes. After my three weeks I had my fat measured again. It has gone up tremendously and my waist measurement also. What is the reason for this and what can I do about it?

So what were the numbers?
The machines at gyms are hardly precise and use the same electrical impedance as home body mass scales. My home ones and the ones at the gym concur but that doesn't mean they are correct. It also can be quite impacted by dehydration.
Your waist measurement going up is an interesting one though by how much?
Have you changed anything else about what you have been doing?

First was 39% and 22.5 kg

Second 46.6% and 26.7 kg

Waist has increased by 2 cm

I have my yearly HbA1c blood test on Monday and am hoping the result will be good. The last one was just on the cusp of being prediabetic after 17 years of diet controlled T2.

Good luck with the HbA1c .. I reckon its almost impossible to put on 4.2 kg of fat in a 3 week period so there must be a problem with one of the readings. Try doing it every week and see what happens. 2 cm on the waist can be a bit of water retention I wouldn't stress about that.

Thanks. Fluid could well be the problem with the measurements. It was a different machine but it's £20 a pop to use the original one. I think that's extortionate but they want to to join a scheme at at least £5 a month for the basic one. I'm not really bothered by the numbers, all I want to know is that I'm actually going in the right direction. The first machine said I need to lose 10.6 kilos of fat and gain 4.6 kilos of muscle, so 6 kilos loss. So far, all the scales I have used have showed a gain. I am now about 57 kilos. 5ft tall.

Consider buying some Tanita scales from Argos for under £40.00, the economics work on the 3rd use and the measurements such as visceral fat, bone density and water % come in handy.
