Keto Diet And Diuretics?

I’ve been in the keto diet for just over 2 months now. My average calorie intake a day is around 1300 calories. So far I may have lost 2 pounds, if even that. I’m not very overweight. I’m 5’7, 170 lbs and do have quite a bit of muscle. My blood sugars range anywhere from low 5’s to low 8’s. I stopped taking insulin over 2 months ago and my blood sugars have been better than before starting keto. However, my blood pressure is nowhere near normal. I’m on ramipril/hctz 10/25mg a day. I was reading the side effects of this medication and one of them was increased blood sugars. I’m also taking 1000mg metformin a day. Can it be possible that since I’m on a diuretic medication and since the keto diet has diuretic effects that I’m loosing too much water and it increases my blood pressure? Normally when I test my blood pressure at rest it’s about 150’s over 80’s and heart rate of 80ish. The other day I did an experiment, and tested my blood pressure after an 45 min intense workout and my blood pressure was 146/55 with a heartrate of 139. It’s just very frustrating as I would really like to get off all medications. I did stop taking them once, and after 4 days off bp medication, my blood pressure got so high I started to have severe dizzy spells and almost fainting.

Hi Conrad,
I am in keto and on diuretics because of an adrenal condition. I am no medic but Ive had htn 30 years.
B.P. does come down on diuretics and after exercise. That heart rate sounds rather high after exercise!

Insulin hacks the renin/angiotensin/aldosterone system and puts up bp, that's why that diuretic works.

A few questions please, if you don't mind?

Have you not had your BP properly assessed?
Have you got recent u&e bloods done?
regards
Derek

Hi Derek, how do they properly assess bp? What are u&e blood tests?
Hi Conrad,
U&E's are blood tests that assess the electrolytes in ones blood by taking blood out and testing it at a lab.
For example they test potassium and sodium. Some people leak potassium through urine and it puts up BP, others cannot control the sodium in the blood.

Your GP should look into this if you have resistant hypertension. Hypertension eventually damages ones heart.

If the GP tried you on Spironolactone for a week or two and your BP came down a lot it could be you have an adrenal problem wants investigating.
But it could be anyone of a number of conditions!?
Perhaps it needs a specialist, but your diastolic doesn't seem right, there is an enormous difference between your systolic and diastolic after exercise.
regards
Derek

I do have a doctors appointment on the 29th and have to get blood work done before my appointment with the endocrinologist on September 10th. I haven’t told my doctor about me being on a keto diet yet, so hopefully she will have some advice and maybe additional tests for blood work. My last appointment was in May and my A1C was 7.6%. Am really hoping it will be lower this time. It had come down quite a bit since I was first diagnosed with diabetes in July of last year. Back then it was 13.8%. Not sure why my blood pressure has gone up so much in a year. When I was first diagnosed and without any meds my bp was 122/68.

That sounds an excellent approach, hope all goes well.
