Type 1 Keto Diet For Type Ones

I read a lot of positive information on the keto diet. Consuming 6 carbs in the morning 12 at lunch and 12 at supper to better manage diabetes
I spoke to my diabetes educator on starting this and they are very apprehensive to accept it as they are concerned that other issues will arise on such a low intake of carbs
They recommend a higher carb intake daily of around 75
I have been a diabetic for a long time and have experienced some complications as a result of roller coaster sugars for a long time
I decided to meet in the middle and have reduced my carb intake substantially. I have lost 12 lbs in 6 weeks and feel better
I have had some issues with highs and more lows but need to get some professional help to better adjust my insulin requirements
I am wondering if there is anyone out there that Has started the full diet (Dr Bernstein’s recommended diet) and how they are doing with it? What issues did you encounter? Have you had any setbacks?

Hi. I mainly follow a keto regime and test for ketones (bhb) with blood strips.
I have less rollercoasters (eating a carby meal last night really demonstrated how tricky it is for me to get the bolus right) but haven't entirely avoided highs either. The highs tend to come if I overdo protein as my body seems more sensitive to it (gluconeogenesis) or skip a meal or exercise a lot without food (pesky liver again).
I am using a lot less insulin (less bolus and slightly lower basal via pump).
I am not as strict as Dr B recommends i.e. feel it is ridiculous to avoid carrots and tomatoes! Nor do I restrict green veg.
Other than that I feel healthy and haven't had a cold for a year (could just be lucky!). Won't know what my HBA1c is until September but going into this it was 7.5% or 58 and like you I've had some complications (retinopathy and slightly leaky kidneys) so am motivated to improve thngs too.
Starting easy worked for me psychologically and I haven't had the keto flu or many cravings.
There's another US book out there which is free from the Diatribe website called Bright Spots and Landmines written by a young type 1. Worth a download.
I know Welsh Mel has done reallly well on it and is using fsl to keep track of her veryflat bgs!

Sorry for late reply, only just found your post. I've been keto for six months now and can't recommend it highly enough. I was already pretty aware of which foods contain which macronutrients, as I've been carb-counting for 12 years prior to going keto.

Earlier this year, I read Dr Bernstein and then 'Ketogenic Diet for Type 1 Diabetes' by Ellen Davis and Keith Runyan. That book tells you all you need to know, including some very useful information and references for those who doubt the benefits of going low-carb.

Good luck!
