Keto diet

I’ve been T1 for 3 years and my weight has been up and down as I’m sure it is for others. I cut back my diet new year and and had good results, but my job started to become stressful so I slipped a bit.

Some one I know has just lost 5 stone since January doing Keto, but he isn’t diabetic, and I wanted to ask if anyone had done it and had any success?

Thanks everyone! Darion.

T2 admittedly but I lost about 8 stone on a keto and intermittent fasting regime and put T2 into remission.
I've kept most of it off for the past 5 years too.

Best thing about it was no hunger whilst losing weight.. you might need to keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels to avoid hypos.

I agree with @bulkbiker , but I’m type 2 as well. I went low carb (under 45g/day) purely to get my blood sugars under control, my shed load of weight loss was a happy side effect.
As Bulkbiker said I too can’t advise on insulin dosage or the risk of hypos for you, a type 1.

Suggest you watch this (search youtube - low carb downunder then search type 1).
You must reduce bolus insulin, you are likely to also need to reduce basal insulin otherwise you will have hypos.
I was already low carb when I started having to use insulin. I have continued to be low carb as don't want the blood glucose roller coaster ;)

Hello all,

I'm new to this and I don't know where to start.

So on the 1st of July I went to hospital as I was getting chest pains so they checked me and everything was OK. The nurse did a random glucose and it was 21! What a shock. So the next day I immediately went on a keto diet and IF (after Dr jason fung and other ppl I searched on youtube) and within a month my numbers started to drop (my sis had GD and gave me her tester) by the end of the month I was getting readings in the 5s 6s and occasional 4s. But for the last week I've noticed more readings back in the 7s and 6s and some 5s. I'm worried I'm going backwards :(

I was 159kg on 1st July and now I am 141kg so I've lost 18kg in less than 6 weeks but I've got a long way to go.

I havnt officially been diagnosed but sure I am T2. I also have fatty liver.

Has anyone experienced a slight rise like this? Then it gets better? Does it need time?

I'm not on any medication except vitamins and Berberine as I want to avoid medication. Plus I feel like constant checking is driving me insane.

Thank you! P.s I have medical anxiety so pls be nice and I am in Australia so we go mmol.

Today's fasting at 8am was 6.5 but I do get DP and after exercise it's been rising to 7s (which rarely did that a few weeks ago)

Jojo85 - you are going in the right direction. You could probably do with knowing some things like HbA1c so you know where you really are and allow you to track improvements. I found the low carb downunder an excellent resource - you will find others.
I'd suggest you keep a log of what you eat - that way you can spot things which cause a rise in blood glucose.
All the best :)

Typeone grit on Facebook are other type 1’s doing keto and can give you more relevant info. Then there dr Bernstein who is and treats type 1 with keto and lots online about his protocol.

obviously avoiding hypos and being aware of differences between nutritional ketosis and dka are the big things to be aware of.

There’s a few type 1 in here that low carb, not sure there’s many that full on keto. @KK123 i think does pretty low carb and might have some resources to help.

I have had ketones in the 0.8 to 5 range, from a quick check a 6.2mmol/l being the highest with a corresponding blood glucose of 4.9 mmol/l. I found butter can have quite an impact ... I'm on insulin but other medication can mask dka - you may find this helpful.

Hi @Darion, I am fairly low carb (around 60 per day) these days but I did do 3 months of keto not so long ago. I didn't have any weight to lose though and my aim really was to keep my levels within a good range. It did work for that but even with lots of management I did end up having more hypos than before. I guess if you're doing it for weight loss which seems to be your sole aim, it would work the same as for anyone else most likely. In the end I upped my carbs because I started to lose weight unintentionally and although I made sure to eat as much protein/fat as I could to try and put the weight back on, the actual amount I had to eat began to feel like I was stuffing myself to an almost bloated level and each meal was becoming a chore. So, in answer to your question, I am sure you would lose weight but you really must keep an eye on your usual regime and adjust your insulin accordingly. x

Hi @Darion I'm new to the forum

Im type 1 and have been for 20yrs. I've always been trying to lower overall hba1c levels (which are dropping) and also tried loosing weight but not really had any success.

I've been on keto for 2 half weeks and already lost 10lbs but most of that is called water weight.
I think I'm in ketosis as I'm sticking to a low 30g net carb limit and hopefully my body is burning fat for energy now. I'm using an app called carb manager which helps with eating and monitoring your carb, protein and fat lvls.
Changing your diet is tough as I've found its mostly eggs, bacon, chicken some veg and some fruit as some contain alot of carbs. I've been more adventurous in the kitchen mind you

I do drink over 2ltrs water a day to stay hydrated and have been testing my ketone lvls more for some reason. I've read some things on the internet about the negative effects it could possibly have especially to your kidneys but it's very conflicting so I'm gonna speak to my dietician about it more I thing as I have stage 2 kidney desease which is at the lower end.
Sorry for the long post. Hope it's helped a little

@Darion also hypo's are very different. I can drop as low as 2.8 and not realize as I'm not getting the usual shakes, short fuse, exhaustion and light headedness but I've felt more in control. Luckily I've got a freestyle Libra 2 that provides low sugar alarms so I have that by my side. Blood sugar levels have been on a plateau and I haven't had the rollercoaster effect for ages so it seems to be managed better. My average lvl is 5.6 mmol.
