Keto with T1 diabetes

Hello Mac

I was diagnosed in Jan 2022 with type 1 age 56 and found the keto after finding the conventional route using insulin to carbs unreliable. I was playing a lot of sports and kept getting hypo glycaemic bouts which massively impacted my quality of life and mental health.
I now eat around 30g of carbs a day and my bloods are usually between 95 and 99 % in range. My medical team are amazed at my results.
I get the odd hypo but only seldom is it a bad one. I have lots of energy and a very healthy diet.
Please let me know if you have any questions as I have spent many hours researching the diet and have some fab recipes.
Thank you everyone for replying. The replies bring hope and joy, and it is great to hear that keto/low carb works for many people. A little update from my side. Since my original post in April 2024, I've tried to stick to low carb, with some on and off periods....Off (low carb) periods were mostly triggered either by me feeling a bit unwell (which I thought at the time was related to my diet) or by simply giving up and eating carbs/sugar again. It wasn't easy, I had to do some research - both reading/watching but also experimenting on myself. As expected, my cholesterol came high during my annual checkup (and GP immediately insisted on statins - I politely declined the offer). With time, I think became more educated and confident. I did a couple of test on my own (e.g. confirmed that triglicyrides are low). I also stopped checking ketons often, as I was a bit obssesed with it, and got a bit unpatient why I'm not in ketosis that often (I somehow end up on average 0.2-0.4, which tenchically speaking is low for keto diet). Anyway...the outcome is that since roughly New Year, I'm off insulin, I feel pretty good, my average glucose for the past 90 days is 6.1 mmol/L (99% in range). I don't count carbs, just trying to minimize them to bare minimum, and eating eggs, meat, fish, vegetables, 90% chocolate etc. plus staying active. Of course, I'm aware this might not last forever...Finally, I was so happy that I also experimented with my thyroid treatment (got off tablets for a month) but this resulted in my THS hormone shooting over 11 mU/L, so defnitely not a good idea. Ok, this is the end of my update. Just thought will write it because someone might find it useful. Greetings.

Hi Jane. Thank you, and congratulations, sounds amazing. Presumably you use now much less insulin?

Hi all,
I have T1D and menopause. I.am doing keto to lose weight. I was eating very little and stuck at 72kg. 1 and half weeks in im eating much more and put on 1.5kg! Im so upset as I expected weight loss. I was told to prioritise fat.and protein, but I realise I'm eating more. Should I stick with it?.will I see weight loss soon? Eating 20-30g carbs needing double insulin so that's messed up. 10g carb snack ends up needing so much insulin. I am determined but disheartened. Louise

check your calorie intake likely eating more than your burning off with exercise etc.
