Hi there, i have been getting keytones in my urine, im not sure why as my sugar level is actually pretty good, its around 59 - 69 at the time i tested for keytones. I have been getting stomach pain, im wondering is it ok to have ketones and type 1 as my blood sugar level is actually good?

I have started to eat more non carb foods im not sure if this is the problem, i will wake and have my injection and have breakfast cereal which has carbs and also other things through out the day and of course if my sugar level drops but i'll have non carb foods for dinner, is this safe?

I'm also doing like 3 units of humolog after i come home from work and not eating any carbs, i go to bed with a great sugar level and wake up in the morning with a great sugar level im not sure if this is ok or will i cause problems to myself?

I'm trying to lose weight and im also exercising would this affect my ketones, exercising?

Thanks for reading, i hope someone can help me out.
Regards

Welcome to the forum , Nicoledee, when you say your levels are 59- 69 is this the US measurement mg/dl or the UK mmol/L ?

Hi Nicoledee.

Here is a link to information about Ketones.
http://www.dgdiabetes.scot.nhs.uk/icp/i ... ones.shtml

An extract:
Anyone can produce ketones for various reasons (eg fasting, dieting). People with type 1 diabetes who have taken insufficient insulin are particularly at risk of developing significantly high levels of ketones. High levels of ketones can result in a metabolic acidosis.

Check out the information in the link.

Hi nicoledee,

Ketones with blood sugars in the 5's and 6's won't pose any danger to your health. It's only when your blood glucose is in the teens that it starts to signify that your body has a chronic shortage of insulin and begins to burn fat and muscle stores for energy because it just can't use the glucose.
If you're registering ketones with bg in the 5's, this may just mean that you have insufficient calories and your body is burning fat to make up the shortfall. Since your bg is 'normal' your blood won't become acidic as it does when the insulin runs out.

All the best,

fergus
