Hi all. As I'm sure EVERYONE on here knows by now I've been ill with a kidney infection for about two months. I've been on about seven courses of antibiotics. Two were the wrong ones. I'm on another course now, amoxicillin, and I've had ketones since last night. They were quite high last night so I drank my weight in water and ate and they disappeared. I woke up this morning with a trace. I've drank two pints of water and now they've gone up to between "faible" and "moyen", 15& 40. What the hells going on?
Thankfully my scan has been moved to 25th April to see if I have stones but ahhhh I'm feeling so fed up. I've rang the diabetic nurse. But had to leave a message so hopefully she gets back to me soon.

It depends what your blood sugars are like if your ketones are at that level. If blood sugars are normal it means you have sufficient insulin to clear the ketones and they won't escalate out of control. Obviously things are a bit off because you have an infection, so keep checking regularly and call 111 if at all worried.

@Chloesnavy If they were high last night, the low level this morning could just be a leftover from that. I agree with the good advice @robert72 has given above.

Perhaps a call to your DSN would put your mind at rest? They could also tell you at what level of ketones and blood sugar you need to be concerned.

Hi Chloe - hope you feel better by now. Kidney infections are horrible. Ketones in the urine are not necessrily a reflection of what's going on in your blood (if prone to infection you may want to buy the blood meter though you would hve to pay for it. IF your infection is better and your blood sugars are normal then the fact that you have a few ketones does not mean you have ketoacidosis. Diabetes Uk do have a careline which gets answered.

I'm definitely not better at all :( my side is still aching and I still feel rather sick. I can't see any difference whatsoever :(

Ah, ketones with a BM of 17 is a bit worrying. Glad to hear is OK now, but should mention that to the nurse when she rings you back.

Probably not easy whilst you have the infection, but high blood sugars will be making the infection worse. Bit of a catch 22 situation, but do try to keep levels under control as much as you can and that should help the infection as well. Anything over 12 is bad news - interferes with the body's ability to heal properly.
