Can someone please seare me into doing something to take control of my diabeties.

Hi!

My motivation is that I don't want a guide dog,Dialysis or a wheelchair just because I liked my spuds, cakes and bread and wouldn't give them up.

Keeps me on the straight and narrow.

Hello nicnac68

What issues are you struggling with regards your Diabetes control ?
Perhaps you could explain a bit :)

Is it med/insulin regime problems ?
Food/diet routine etc ?
HbA1c result ?

All of the above, I took myself off metformin as it was making me so ill with stomach pains.
My BS are neaver below 14
I seem to be addicted to chocolate and biscuts and always tell myself "today will be the last day"
I have had this illness for 30 years and cannot deal with it
I need to lose 6 stone

Need I go on x

Sorry seems an easy answer I know but you just gotta do it. Make that decision and be strong . I know its hard but its better than feeling unwell. There is plenty of info on here and realistically your not going to get it right every time that is where testing comes in . Especially as difrent foods react with different people differently. Bananas beans and bread are spikers for me. As are jelly sweets :-( who knew lol

Don't apologise! We're here to help.

If you think a low carb diet is the way you want to go, the best way to start is looking for recipes you like the sound of. We have a great selection of user-submitted recipes here: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4871

There's some general chit chat on recipes here (careful though, they're not all low-carb - if in doubt, just ask!) viewforum.php?f=3

We also have a few cookbooks for you to browse at your leisure. Most of the recipes in them are low-moderate in carb value, but have all the nutritional values listed to save you the hard work.

Here's our two most recent cookbooks:

BBQ cookbook: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/welcome/defau ... =SEG_BBQBK
Summer cookbook: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/welcome/?seg=SEG_SUMBK&ref=1

As for the drastic side-effects of metformin, it may be worth discussing this with your doctor as there could be an alternative medication out there that you'll get on better with :)

If you want to do low carb then a really good book to read is Dr Bernsteins Diabetes Solution (sorry everyone for recommending it yet again!!)

I have found this really helpful and Bernstein has been a diabetic (type 1 but he also uses his regime with type 2s) for a very long time.

As suggested above look for recipes you like. I looked all over the Internet for inspiration as I didn't want to feel hungry or deprived and now I feel satisfied, not deprived, and have achieved super blood sugar levels.

Good luck!

Hello  I think the best advice I can give is :-

' No one can go back and make a new start, but anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending'

Good luck and best wishes

There are many people on this site, me included, who made the move into changing their lifestyle. Don't think of it as a diet, a diet is just the things you eat, good or bad. A lifestyle is something you can follow MOST of the time! Even a lifestyle has to take a day off now and then. I lost nearly as much weight as you need to do. Between 5 1/2 and 6 stones. As my weight went down so did my need for diabetes medication. I am now meds free with my first year anniversary coming up in Sep.

Us type2s are lucky in a way, for some of us the loss of weight improves our diabetic condition. If you have to join a slimming group I can reccomend WeightWatchers. One of my sisters is a type1 and she swears by Slimming World. With the advice available on this site you should be able to sort out a lifestyle that suits you.

Now for the hard bit. Nobody can do it for you, unless going under the knife is an option. It took me barely 18 months to lose my weight, and I can honestly say it was easy. I didn't give up the things I like, I just cut down on the things that were not good for me. Taking up walking was also a good move, even though I have severe arthritis in my big toes (it would have to be there wouldn't it!) I can still walk far enough to have good exercise. OK, I said 18 months for me. Others have taken less time, some take more. You might be thinking that the amount of time is too much, you want it now. You aint gonna get it now. Chuck that desire right out the window. Set yourself a time of say 1 year. In a year you can do so much, when those pounds start to go your strength of will should start to rise. That year is going to pass whether you start to lose weight or not. Decide who you want to be in a years time. You, or a thinner, lighter, fitter you who might be lucky enough to lose the need for some meds.

Over to you.

PS. You can have a little blowout over Christmas! Then get back on track.

Yes your are right, I want everything now, we are going on holiday in May so things could be so much easier by then. Maybe the tiredness will go and the older looking face.
One step at a time and start today x

Hi Nicnac68 .

With confusion in terms of knowing just where to begin or start :?
We all can feel a bit low or in a rut sometimes as Diabetes never gives us a 'day off' from it !
It is with us 24/7 ... :|

Try writing a love foods/things list and a hate foods/list ALSO
do a 'maybe might like more' food/things list .
Include activities too in these lists .

Then line them up side by side . 1 2 3
Look closer at the like and maybe list and whittle down
a few recipes using these more favourite things .
In a healthier way to still enjoy these yet lose the lbs .
With the activities see what can be tweaked into your daily routine etc.

Use the forum threads to rummage through for great ideas and some inspiration .
Ask anything you need/feel here - we are all here to help/support eachother

Finally what meds and support do/are you getting from your HCP currently ?
We would all love everything done in a day but its best done in small steps -
one day/step at a time ...

Like RRB's saying - it is so true too :)
Also there is the saying of tomorrow is the first day for the rest of your life ...

Anna .

I am on Lantus and Novorapid
Ramipril for high blood pressure
Anti depressants ( cant remeber name) been on for 15 years
Iron tablets

Not too much help given really from my diabetic team, my consultant just says well we can't give you more insulin as you will put on more weight - it sort of makes me want to give up if he isn't interested in helping me.

Nick I just wanted to add that for the past 4 weeks or so I have reduced my carb intake, not massively, but a little lower and my blood sugars have been SO much better, in the 4's,5's and 6's, with the odd one a little higher now and then, but I am so pleased with the results, good for the soul, good for the mind and no massive spikes or high's. It could be just a small change that could make that huge positive difference to your diabetes management.

Good luck

RRB :)

I'm surprised they won't up your insulin if your levels are so high, despite the concern of weight gain. Have you done a DAFNE course or something similar as this would allow you to adjust your own insulin dependent on what you are eating.

I know that weight gain can also be caused by some antidepressants - have you and your doctor discussed this?

It may be hard but it would be a good start to try to rid yourself of the biscuits and chocolate as this will lower your carbs straightaway. I know how hard this can be especially if you are feeling depressed. However, getting rid of as much sugar out of your diet may make you crave sugary foods less.

Try to not beat yourself up about finding it hard to make a change - its a challenge for all of us!

Hi nic
I dont know if you live alone if you do then you have to be strong enough to NOT buy chocolate biscuits ( Suggest sticking a notice on your forehead when going shopping saying do not sell this person any chocky bickies )
Maybe just pretend you have one! If someone else does the shopping ask them to on no account buy you chocky in any form If you have family buy a lockable box to keep the goodies in and give the key into the care of your youngest relative .

hi, insulin I have no clue about im afraid but weight loss and low carb is my area :)

forget weight loss for now, if you low carb I defy you to not lose weight by accident

I would start by getting an app called myfitnesspal for smartphone or internet version

record everything you eat, its a pain in the butt but hey you wanna get better or not, once recorded you can look up what you are eating which has the single worse carb value, then cut that one thing out and replace it with something low carb, ok lets say this is chocolate, find something you like that isn't chocolate or at least 70% dark chocolate if you can tolerate it (first time I tried it I spat it out but now I live for it) just make sure what you replace that one thing with is lower than your next highest carborific food, and hey presto you are on the right track, now a day later look at it again and find the single highest carb food and do the same, it becomes like a challenge each day or so reducing the total amount of carbs until you eventually find that your 350g a day has become 150g and then the challenge is 100g and so on, try it your bgs will go down and your weight will come off this in itself will be enough of a motivation to try harder and do better, eventually you will plateaux with the weight then you can start looking at calories or whatever else but by then you will have lost say 2 or 3 stone and be on your way, the lower the better in my opinion.

is it going to be painless? lol be serious, its bloody awful but its a means to an end and the rewards are unbelievable,

you have it within you to heal yourself, you are amazing, now show the world what I already know to be the case

give us a report each day if you like to let us know how its going, ill watch with interest and you never know you may even inspire others with the same problems to follow your example, now how cool would that be

good luck
