Hello,

I would like to get an idea of which books people have felt have been particularly helpful with the management of our diabetes. Below are mine, what others would people recommend?

Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
Carb Counter: A Clear Guide to Carbohydrates in Everyday Foods (Collins GEM)
Gary Taubes: The Diet Delusion

Dillinger

Hi, I found all the books you mention here very useful, but for a newbie I would definitely say start off with
"Dr Charles Clarke Diabetes Revolution" - as it is really easy to read but explains things very well.
(and the - Collins Gem Carb Counting is a must)

All the best everyone

Karen

I have all the above mentioned books, but have heard Gretchen Becker's book( I forget the title, but it' ssomething like "The First Year".) is good and I use David Mendosa's website.
I have just read "Pure,White and Deadly", by John Yudkin, which is very well written if old, and not exclusively about diabetes

A brief intro to Gretchen Becker, she is a wonderful lady with a great sense of humour, multi talented and I have email contact with her.

http://www.mendosa.com/gretchen.htm - at the bottom of this page you will see information about some of the books that she has written.

All the best

Karen

Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year - An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)
Gretchen Becker

Snap !, This one I bought before diagnosis when I thought I was type 2. Very good both for intial information and later for more in depth info on things like blood tests, diet, testing etc . It arrived on my second day in hospital and even though I found I had type 1, I read it cover to cover and found it very useful

Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults (Class Health) by Ragnar Hanas
This one I read from the library, soon after diagnosed,it was useful background, even though I was neither child nor young person.. If you are the parent of a child with diabetes it must essential reading.

Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin
Gary Scheiner

how to make insulin work to suit your lifestyle, rather than fitting your life round your insulin. Carb counting, insulin adjustment and more.

Pumping Insulin: Everything You Need for Success on a Smart Insulin Pump by John, D.B.A. Walsh and Ruth Roberts
The pumpers bible, everything you need to know about an insulin pump.

And looking up the details on Amazon, this one I'd really like to read but I haven't got a spare £95!
Type 1 Diabetes in Adults (Hardcover)
by Serge Jabbour (Editor), Elizabeth A. Stephens (Editor)

I have the following books - all of which I have found helpful.

The first year (Type 2 Diabetes) - Gretchen Becker
Diabetes for Dummies - Dr Alan Rubin
Diabetes Solution - Richard Bernstein MD
Blood Sugar 101 (What they don't tell you about Diabetes - Jenny Ruhl
The hugely better carbohydrate counter - Carolyn Humphries

Like others:
The first year Type 2 Diabetes - Gretchen Becker
Diabetes for Dummies - Dr Alan Rubin
Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution - Richard Bernstein MD
Blood Sugar 101 - What they don't tell you about Diabetes - Jenny Ruhl

Plus:
Collins Gem Carb Counter
Type 2 Diabetes in Adults of All Ages - Dr Ragnar Hanas and Dr Charles Fox (delivered by Amazon today so not read yet)

I would say that the one book that really stands out for me is The first year (Type 2 Diabetes) - Gretchen Becker

Sticking to Books: (no I'm not a Post - it Note) :D

I have the following.
Collins Gem Carb Counter
Collins Gem Calorie Counter (more information than Carb Counter)
The Calorie Carb and Fat Bible 2009 (just ignore the dietary advice ?)
I plan to get the Collins Gem GI Book. (That's my diet basically)

Anything else I roam the Internet. :D
