Diagnosed as Type 2 , 2 years ago and after initial success at getting BS down have been struggling a bit. Change of job following redundancy means longer commuting and consequently less time for exercise. I know I have to address that. Recently I have switched to lactose free milk and resumed eating porridge at breakfast. If anything BS has gone up. Is the benefit of reduced lactose cancelled out by the lactose entering the blood stream quicker (apparently it does) ? And is porridge a good idea anyway? I enjoy the full cooked breakfast but wary of having it every day

Porridge can push sugar levels up. Some people find porridge doesn't affect their levels whereas for some of us it pushes our levels up too far.

A cooked breakfast can be fine but it can depend on the quality of the meat and oils.

I personally avoid bacon where possible because of the number of preservatives the supermarket bacon contains. Sausages as well tend to contain a relatively high dose of additives.

I try to avoid to cooking things in oil where I can help it as there's conflicting evidence over the safety of cooking oils. I prefer to cook in butter where possible as I believe it to be more healthy. I could be wrong.

I don't have much experienced with lactose free milk though.

I make my porridge with ground almonds, coconut, flax seed, oat bran & soya milk.

It sustains me till lunch, & I rarely feel hungry.

Is it possible to have the actual recipe for your porridge please I really like the sound of it but would have no idea of quantities to mix together!
Thanks

2 dsp ground almonds (£6.50 per Kg in Indian shops)
1 dsp milled flax seeds
2 dsp coconut powder (could use dessicated)
1 dsp oat bran
mix well in a 500 ml pyrex jug to about 300 ml with milk - I use soya
vary as liked - add cinnamon if it lowers your BG
sometimes I add a few sultanas (before cooking) or fruit, crushed nuts make it crunchy
microwave for about 2 1/2 minutes (it boiled over in my son's m-w so watch it at first)
I don't need anything else for 3 hours - & can play tennis on it.
The protein & included veg fat is much more sustaining than carb cereal.

Hi, just wanted to say I have found Lactose Free Milk very good and use it all the time, for me its better than skimmed or soya milk.

As for the porridge I always make mine with water but thats how I like it.

Diagnosed Type 2 in January 2008.
Metformin prescribed October 2008.
Metformin stopped January 2010. In the words of my doctor 'your blood test results are non-diabetic so I see no reason to continue with metformin'
