Despite being diagnosed about 9 yrs ago( initially with Type2), I've never been told what these abbreviations stand for. It was finally confirmed I was Type1 or because it was late onset Type1 n 1/2. So what does LADA stand for? I struggle daily to get a decent level if blood glucose. Some days high n other days slightly lower,but never consistent,despite eating mostly same type if food on regular basis. Don't know anyone else who is Type 1.

latent autoimmune diabetes in adults
ie it develops fairly slowly but is autoimmune . Both it and 'classic' T1 are caused by the body attacking it's own beta cells
I don't think anyone has a totally consistent pattern from day to day but you shouldn't have big swings if your insulin is adjusted properly for both food and activity levels.
What sort of insulin regime are you using? This can make a difference.

Hi. For info, LADA to be precise refers to T1 caused by auto-immune action. Some cases of T1 can be caused by viruses, pancreatitis and so on. What these should be referred to I have no idea but the outcome is the same and they are essentially T1 just as LADA is. As Phoenix says for most of those on insulin when it is balanced correctly you should have fairly predictable results but there will be exceptions. Yes, let us know more about your regime.

@Daibell
Read this, it's the ADA version , slightly updated of World Health Organisation document about the various categories of diabetes
Diabetes caused by pancreatitis is neither T1 nor T2, similarly diabetes possibly caused by a virus (though a virus is also thought to be a trigger in T1) .
Pragmatically people end up being called T1 or T2 even when the cause is well known ( for example steroid induced diabetes )

Thanks for this.

I was diagnosed T2, 20 months ago, then through a GAD test diagnosed LADA 18 months ago.
But a few months back, a new hospital nurse read out my hospital notes, and there was no reference to LADA at all. Just T1 in the honeymoon period. Drs either categorise you as T1 or T2..... But with a few other sub categories in between.

It doesn't really seem to make any difference in your treatment.

Being LADA just means that your pancreas still has some limited ability to make insulin. I understand a normal healthy pancreas has around 15 million insulin making beta cells. No idea how many I have left, but enough to make small quantities of insulin, sufficient for me not to need insulin on a low carb high fat diet, for now.

Hi Jeanie. I'm LADA too so you're far from alone.

Take a look on the LADA / 1.5 Forum also the Type 1 Forum, and you'll find loads of folks on there.
I've been surprised just how many diabetic folk there are around!
