Hi everyone, I was diagnosed type 2 five years ago after having gestational diabetes. I've been doing low carb / keto for the whole time but in the last year I just can't keep my sugars under control.

I had a blood test on Tuesday, and can see on my medical record that my hba1c has come back, but there's no sign of the antibody test for type 1.5.

For those of you who have had that test recently, how long did it take for the results to come back? I don't want to chase up our totally overwhelmed surgery yet if it takes a while!

Thank you!

Ages!!! At least 3 weeks, may even have been more. In fact they lost the first one and the second took another 3 weeks! x

Did you ask for the antibody test? It isn't usually done more than a year or so after onset since it's probable the antibodies aren't still around. It's a test for a particular antibody that may register negative even if you are type one or LADA, so many doctors don't see the point.
It does take longer than the standard blood screen, and may even need to be sent out to a test lab if your hospital don't do it ' in house'.
I think my last one took about a week to come back, that was within the hospital.

Thanks for the reply. The doctor asked for it for various reasons. Is there another way of testing for LADA other than the antibody test?

I would argue a cpeptide test is a better indicator, because it shows how much insulin you are producing. T2s typically produce lots, LADA only a little. Though it isn't as definitive as a positive GAD test, it should pick up those who are GAD negative....

You really need both. Type 2's can be producing lots of insulin (most of them I think), some insulin (if the pancreas is wearing out) or no insulin (pancreas overworked and died). Type 1's usually produce none, unless they're LADA, in which case the range is zero to normal production. So, a c-pep test is only definitive if you are producing lots of insulin and then you're type 2. The antibody test is only definitive if it's positive and then you're type one. There's an awful lot of in between results that could be either. Certain combinations though are suggestive, but not provable.
