Recently I've been getting highs during my period. My previous endocrinologist considered giving me medication to lower for only when I have my period. Do any of you know if this works please? Thanks

That's a tricky one because for me I swing either way during a period. I would say if it was recommended to you that maybe give it a try if high levels are a constant issue. But hormones usually makes our sugar levels quite unstable at that time... well it definitely does so for me... it sounds like it may do that for you too. I guess just monitor and make sure you don't hypo on meds if you choose to go on them. Otherwise I'd probably be just watching my diet and controlling that more... in fact that would be my first option and was my first option before I ran out of choices years back. By that I mean lower your carb intake to see if that helps, etc. Make sure you drink enough water, get good rest, etc. But if you've tried your best with it, then maybe meds is your next option. I wish you the best whatever you decide. :)

I've been low carbing since January. Initially it worked but isn't any more. I dropped to 100g a day initially and now to 50-80g and it isn't working.

:( sorry to hear that. I think you just have to keep trying things until you find what works for you. I know I changed my diet a fair bit over the years. I've now changed my diet even more in the last couple of years for a another disease I have. It does get frustrating when things don't work... I know that feeling. It just may be that you need medication if diet isn't helping. I know some people on low carb can go as low as 20g per day but for me that was too low. I was getting headaches on just 50g per day. But in the end I found the LCHF wasn't for me and I just changed my diet again to try and get good stats all round (not just with my sugar levels). So don't give up, just keep trying to change things up. Ask for help from your doc if you need to as sometimes you just need to be on meds. I got to the point with diabetes myself. I just had to accept things. But the most important thing is to keep noticing and move forward to get the sugar levels controlled. What works for me or someone else may not even work for you. But you never know until you try it. At least you can say you've tried. Hugs.

I also get headaches if I go below 50-80g depending on how much exercise I do. Will be going to see my GP next week if I can get in to see her. I'm currently house bound with chickenpox. All scabbed over and feeling better but still contagious until tomorrow. Adult chickenpox hasn't been fun!!

As a general comment, Lauren, unless you know what he might prescribe for you, nobody can have a clue whether it has the potential for a positive or negative impact.

Some diabetes medications have an impact immediately and some need to be taken fr several days before they start to show a benefit.

For me, the actual drug would be very important, bearing in mind every medication has pros and cons and I'd want to consider the bigger picture. For instance, some medications help with weight loss, which for me, personally, as I am now, wouldn't necessarily be a great thing, for others it could be a big tick in the positives box. Some medications can tend to encourage weight gain, which folks might find an unattractive prospect.

I guess it also depends how high you go and what the expected impact of the medication on those numbers might mean. Are the highs very high, or just higher than you would really like to achieve?

Your profile states pre-diabetes?

My bg is definitely more unstable before and during my period (also unstable when stressed and when sleep deprived), so I guess it makes sense to take something only when you need it.

I tend to compensate by going even lower carb and eating more fat and protein to compensate. I find them both very stabilising.

Do you know what the suggested medication is?

Levels are going between 10-15 during periods. Are between 4.8-6 other times of the month. Can't stop drinking and want to sleep and no energy when that high. Diagnosed as pre diabetes in January by endocrinologist. Have hormonal insulin resistance PCOS. Going to see GP next week hopefully to get something sorted. Haven't discussed what medication yet as wanted to try low carb first.

More than likely if they need to place you on meds they will probably start with metformin. But then also because you are between 10-15 they may consider a drug that works on stimulating your pancreas to produce more insulin too. That should help lower your levels quicker. Metformin does lower your level too... they will probably wait and see if that works first. That's what they did with me anyhow. It sounds to me like you don't need medication any other time really. See what your doc says anyhow.

500mg metformin for a month. Then a review.

May I ask when you might next expect to see your bonkers numbers? The reason I ask is Metformin works when the medication has built up your system. One cycle doesn't seem like much of a trial, bearing mind the foregoing.

From the 18th may onwards. GP thinks that the heat may also be having something to do with it.

Assuming you mean 18th June, that's not a massive amount of time to get the Metformin into your system.

I hope it doe something for you, but would urge you to do some reading up before you go back, so that you can argue for a longer trial, if necessary.

I'm scheduled for a regular medication review then. She has said I can trial it until September when I see endocrinologist. Or try something else after 2-3 months. Can also request slow release if need be.

Yes, my body stresses with heat too and my sugars are more likely to be higher in hot weather than cold weather.

I hope the metformin helps. Although I think you need at least 3 months to see what it does for you rather than just a month. I'm glad to hear that you can stay on it up to September at least though.

Mine went low during a cold spell after a warm spell so think it could be weather related. Had the first one with dinner last night. Nearly time for another with lunch. On one a day so going to have it at lunch time. GP proposed breakfast but I struggle to eat first thing and don't want it on an empty stomach.

Yeh don't bother taking metformin on an empty stomach as it doesn't sit too well with most people doing that. It's best to have with food... that's how it should be taken anyhow. I hope it works out for you and you see your numbers dropping.
