is it absolutely necessary to use a new lancet every test

Hi ,

you can use your lancet 2 or 3 times without any problems as long as no one but you uses it.

cheers,do the test results ever vary? as it was 10 in the afternoon after dinner then i tested 2 hours later and it was 8,then i had 1 slice of toast(granary) and a raw carrot;when i tested 2 hours later it was 15.5,i tested again 2 hours later and it was 9.5.i am cofused about the wide variation

Your blood sugar is in a constant state of flux, depending on when you last meal was and what was in it.

The pattern you describe sounds to me like your body is working on the carbs in your food, which is why they get a bit lower, and that is good, your pancreas is still working. But those readings are way too high, you need to do something to bring them down.

Testing is only worthwhile if you make use of the information to modify your diet, at the moment the readings are confusing and you are not sure what to do with them.

I see you are a T2 on diet only. Whatever dietary approach you adopt as a T2, succesful diabetics reduce the amount of starchy carbohydrate they eat, even the people who wouldn't identify as low carbers. You need a diet that gives you the results you want and that you can stick to for the rest of your life. But you need to get those readings down quickly.

Look in the diet and food forums here and try to find something that will work for you because you will have to stick to it for the rest of your life. Ask questions and use the information you get from regular blood tests to bring your readings down.

And I use my lancets more than once :D

The 7.5 difference between 8 and 15.5 is almost certainly the Granary bread it has a similar effect on me, perhaps not 7.5 but it still raises my bg levels by around 4.5mmol/L. I have found that Bergen Low GI Soya & Linsead bread is the best bread for me it has a carb value of 11.9g per slice which is a lot less than most breads. Some of the slimming breads like Nimble might be better too although I've not tried them.

All carbs will make your bg levels rise and then fall as they are processed by your body. But different foods affect different people er, differently :)

It definitely sounds like that particular Granary bread is not for you though, keep testing and you will find what works for you
