Hi everyone,

So I received my latest HBA1C results today, up to 60 from 48 in May/22, can't believe I've let it get to that level again, this time last year I was at 39, just devastated. I'm T2. My cholesterol is also really bad, showing as 6.3, up from 5.7 in May, expecting a very angry and disappointed phone call from my DN, I'd posted a few days ago saying I was really trying to get back on track with this and go back to much lower carb eating which I have done, one positive is I've lost 4 pounds in less than a week but those results have floored me. I took my eye off the ball with this due to severe anxiety and just no motivation to take care of myself or my diet, let this be a lesson to me and anyone else this may help, diabetes just isn't something to be ignored or played around with, I knew it would be bad as I wasn't feeling good after having dinner a couple of nights ago (low carb) and I tested and meter showed my level at 10, it's never been that high since I was diagnosed. I think it'll be back on the Metformin for me, I'd stopped taking it as the side effects were getting very bad due to my horrendous diet but think it may be time to go back on it now, any help I can get to bring this back down will be welcome. I'm determined to get this back down and reduce my cholesterol as well, I know the DN will try to prescribe statins but I don't want to go down that route unless I really have to. Sorry for the rant, just gutted.

Unfortunately if you are as unlucky as I was, Metformin will do its worst even if eating low carb.
I had to stop taking the tablets as I was so miserable, and could not even leave the house (some days I could not even risk going downstairs) after I took the single tablet of Metformin and one of Atorvastatin, as I could not run up the stairs fast enough. I was having 50 gm of carbs max each day.
My cholesterol went down eating low carb and full fat, so I think that the information concerning cholesterol is flawed somehow.

Your cholesterol will be raised while you are losing weight. Because your glucose is high(ish) you are not using lipid energy much, and not creating new glucose from fat. But your body is losing weight by trying to shift lipids out of storage, so there will be increased transport of lipids. It is the ratio of HDL to LDL that is important, and the Trigs value. Was your blood test a fasting test. Doctors say it is not necessary to do so, but it gives a false high because any fat eaten close to the test time will be in transit.

You’ve obviously been having a difficult time mentally which makes everything harder, is there any support you can access to help with the anxiety? In the meantime, there’s no point dwelling on the past, you know how to do this, you’ve done it before which means you can do it again. If your DN is angry please tell them to get some humanity and try again — none of us is perfect and our numbers aren’t the measure of our worth. You need kindness, including from yourself.

I'm impressed that your numbers were lower before this and believe that you can go lower again. You have us for online support here though have you looked at MyFitnessPal the free version and the Lo carb program. Do keep checking in there are times I feel ****** and self sabotage and i had a scary DN too who threatened to put me on Insulin though I've since been able to get everything in check. All the best.

Thank you for posting this. I'm having a really hard time too right now, which is why I came here to search "metformin" and found your thread.
