I was diagnosed with T2 in August of 2015. My results then were:

HbA1c - 48mmol [48+ diabetic level]
Serum gamma GT level [liver function] - 70 u/l [should be less than 45]

After this I managed to lose some weight but Christmas came and I fell back into eating patterns and neglected my control. Needless to say I put all the weight on and more and felt just awful.

To cut a long story short I had an appointment in June this year by which time my HbA1c had gone up to 54 and I still wanted to try and get it down without taking medication but at my appointment 2 weeks later I had to admit defeat. I felt like I was in the grip of something and despite knowing what I should do I could not. Reluctantly I agreed to go on Metformin (2 per day).

I also logged on to this Forum and read all the supportive advice and began a low carb/high fat diet. Surprisingly the Metformin helped. My appetite was curbed and I had no horrid side effects. I started this at the end of July this year.

To date I have lost 20lbs and am still going. My latest results are:

HbA1c - 41mmol [just in the non-diabetic bracket]
Serum gamma GT level - 30 u/l

I am so pleased.

Don't worry; I don't count myself as cured. This is always something I will have to look out for but I am pleased to know I am protecting myself and giving myself the best chance. I will continue with all the good advice given here. I test every day and on food.

Thank you so much to everyone who has written a post and or liked, supported or responded to any of my posts. You're all fantastic and I couldn't have got here without you.

We will not be defeated.

Well done.

Glad you are finding the metformin agrees with you. I have been taking it for the last 8 years or so despite an A1c in the thirties. Although diet and exercise are still more important, metformin does help and is also said to have other benefits in avoiding diabetes complications.

Yes. I heard a lot of negativity about Metformin (side effects etc) and was reluctant to take it because of that....and my distaste for having to take anything. I swallowed my pride along with the tablets and I'm glad I did. It has helped me to help myself; at least that's how I look at it. The eating LCHF did the job but the tablets made it easier to do.

I have since read some encouraging things about Metformin and its protective benefits so I am not so eager to stop taking it. Whilst understanding it is not for everyone, I do hope some are not put off trying it like I was.

Good luck with managing your condition.

Thanks...and ha ha about the shoes. Fortunately I kept a lot of my (nice) old clothes which I can now wear. A whole new wardrobe without the expense. I will treat myself though ;)

Nice work @Lily76 and thanks for sharing, it's always good to read good news. :)

That's exactly what I thought! There's so much bad news in the world. If even one person is encouraged by this it is more than worth my time.

Looks like you've done fantastically well too. People like you help people like me. Thank you.
