Hi,

I've been following a LCHF diet and it's working great, I've lost 5 kg in 3 weeks and feel a lot better, blood sugar is looking good as well. Problem is that my Cholesterol has gone up, Not whilst on this diet it's from prior, in the good old bad old days!!
My question is how will the LCHF diet affect my cholesterol? I've been led to believe that it'll stabilise and come down because I'm not eating any processed foods, can anyone advise please?

Hi Dave,
You may need to modify your saturated fat intake. I have had to. However you need to get a full lipid test done, re Total Cholesterol, HDL and Triglicerides.

Derek

Thanks Derek,
Since being diagnosed in July I've not had any sat fats, I think my next test in a couple of months will be the main event.
I'm just a bit worried that it'll go up if I'm not careful.
When I had my last results last week the nurse said she didn't separate the results down to HDL and Trigs as it wasn't worth it!!

There should be no problem. It is worth it. It may have to be a fasting test next time.

Perhaps you may be helped by the Prof. Ken Sakaris videos he is an expert in cholesterol. Google his names his talks are on Youtube.
The Norwegians have higher Cholesterol than the Brits and less heart disease!

Cheers I'll look into that.

Hi. Having a lipids breakdown is worth it. Perhaps not for each review but to see where you are and to put any statins into context. The total figure is pretty meaningless and you need the LDL, HDL and Trig numbers to derive ratios and compare with what good ratios are. Many find that a low-carb diet doesn't affect the total much but helps reduce the bad cholesterol.

On a LCHF diet your triglycerides will go down (excellent) your HDL will go up (good) your LDL reading may stay the same, it may go down or for a minority of people, it may go up. But, it will change into the 'large fluffy' form of LDL that is not harmful.
Your total cholesterol could go up simply because your HDL has gone up,which is good.

I agree that you should watch some of the Ken Sakaris videos - and Dr Malcolm Kendrick is certainly worth a read 'The Great Cholesterol Con' - certainly if you are being 'threatened' with statins.

Just to add when you are losing weight CHO can be higher as the fat getting off your body is circulating before it exits.
