I'm fairly new to Diabetes (Dec 08) and suffer from terribly painful foot/legcramp - night time usually worse than day time but if I have consumed alcohol for example and my BG is presumably high, pain can be excruciating. Practice Nurse says no link with Diabetes - not convinced. Currently taking 1x500mg Metformin. Guidance appreciated

Welcome to the forum,Lindas.Do you test your bloods to see what sort of levels you have? Another question is are you currently taking Simvastatin ,this has the know side effect of causing muscle pains in some people.

Sue - no-one has suggested anything re testing sugar levels. Also not on medication you mention - do you find cramp is a common thread among diabetics?

Hi Lindas,

You can read about what causes cramps in Wikipedia. It doesn't look like it has any connection with diabetes. I think you may have to agree with your nurse.

Cramps, (sometimes called charley horses in North America), are very unpleasant, often painful, sensations caused by contraction or over shortening of muscles. Cramps can be caused by cold, overexertion or low calcium level in blood (especially for adolescents where they need calcium for both blood and bone maturing). Illness or poisoning can also cause cramps, particularly in the stomach, which is referred to as colic if it fits particular characteristics.

To properly control your diabetes you really need to know how certain foods affect your blood sugar levels ,this is why testing is important.

I suffer from restless legs all the time, have done since long before I was a diabetic.Quinine can help with painful cramps .It can also be found in tonic water. Also sometimes taking a drink of water with a small pinch of salt can help as well.

You are absolutely right to be NOT CONVINCED.

See this thread.

I get cramp quite often too, but not related to high BG. Don' have high BG EVER!!!.
While T1 was in hospital the other week, My hand cramped as I was driving up for evening visiting. I was changing gear with a claw and it hurt. It's hard to concentrate on the traffic, when in that kind of pain, but I had no choice. It went off after about 5 minutes.
