Hello There I am a recently diagnosed type 2 ,i have had leg pain at the front of my leg .It normally starts of a night when i lay down to sleep and keeps me awake. It is only in the one leg at the front below the knee, does anyone know why i get this?Ive spoken to my GP and he seems to think it is muscluar but i think it is not.I was diagnose Sept 2007 after i went to GP with severe back pain ,this has abated but the leg pain i have had for 6 months before type2 diagnosis. Also before i was diagnosed i was very tired and confused and forgetfull is this also a symptom?Im on metaformin 2 twice aday and this seems fine, with a sensible diet and weight loss programme my vision is still blurred how long before this goes ?Alot of questions but i need some advice please.

Hi Wendy,
If your doctor has also given you tablets for cholesterol (particularly simvastatin) then these are likely to be the culprits.

I had leg pains with simvastatin.

What was your blood sugar on diagnosis? & now?

What is your sensible diet?

I was eating the NHS/DUK "sensible diet" based on complex carbohydrates & maintaining an active life. Last leg leg pains threatened to end my activity & I started following a reduced carb diet suggested by Fergus, & others on this forum. The pains went away & I am fully active again.

It might be muscular but in view of your back pain it might be sciatica - where the cause is in or around your spine but the pain is felt peripherally. Could conceivably also be statins, or a circulatory issue: really IMNSHO the sort of thing that needs a second opinion.

Hello There thanks for the replies firstly my colesterol has always touch wood been low so i dont have to take any meds for that,my sensible diet is low fat milk spread, and fruit and lastly no chocolate which was my downfall. But im very active and do lots of running around, ive lost 3 and half stone since diagnosis in September.I went to the diabetic clinic talks and healthy eating plans ect but i found them very contradictory,so i just cut out fatty things.I must admit i did eat alot of homemade cakes and things before so ive had a wake up call so to speak.I feel better in my self but the only downside is the leg pains.I have now cut out potatoes becuase i feel that could be linked to my leg pains,im not sure but im going to give it a whirl.I some times feel light headed and im going to see the nurse on Monday and see what she has to say.Ah my blood sugar when i was first diagnosed was 25 ,im sure that was the mark,i have not been given a glucose tester ,should i ask for one?only got urine sticks which are always 0 so i hope im doing something right. It has taken ages for it to sink in and at first iwas really worried about what i ate but i now feel being diabetic isnt so bad i can survive, but i miss my chocolate and my daughters cakes........... :P

Hi Wendy,
You don't mention what medication you are on, but if it is rosiglitazone or pioglitazone these can also give leg pains. You definitely need a monitor. It sounds like you don't have any idea of what your blood sugar level is, and without that information you can't keep your blood sugars within the safe zone. Ask your GP or diabetes nurse for a monitor. They are not available on prescription but the manufacturers give loads of them free to surgeries. If they can't or won't give you one then they are not particularly expensive to buy from any high street chemist. Once you have one then the test strips that they use are supposed to be available on prescription, although doctors are being advised by their PCTs to limit prescribing them to cut down costs. So you might have a fight to get them prescribed.

The urine test won't show very much at all. Urine tests are considered less reliable than blood tests, and in some cases may even prove dangerous due to their inaccuracy, and nowadays it is recommended that they be used only when it is not possible to perform blood tests.

Your cutting out potatoes is a very wise move, although probably for the wrong reasons! Potatoes are very high in carbohydrates and it is carbs that your digestive system converts into glucose and stores in your blood (what we refer to as blood sugar). The other food types that are very high in carbs are wheat products (bread, cakes, cereals), pasta and rice, and of course sugar. But whether you need to cut down on these, and by how much, depends really on what your blood sugar levels are - so you can see how important it is that you get hold of a blood test meter. Let us know how you get on when you see the nurse on Monday.

Hello There Ive been to the nurse today and my bloods were 8 ,i asked for monitor but she doesnt like to give them becuase people get worried when they get high results, dah i only want to monitor my own and i dont think i would panic. But im going to Boots tomorrow and purchase one,im following the carb diet recommended on here i think it is a good idea,.The nurse said my leg pains would probably go when i get my blood sugar down,I hope so!She also said i might get the pains in my other leg too.So im going to carry on with my diet and do no carbs ect and hopefully all will be well.By the way i take metformin500mg 2 twice a day and asprin 1 xday, she mentioned that she might increase my metformin after next blood test in Febuary and it is early days...But thank you for your advice it is very welcome ,becuase i dont really know anyone near me who has my type2 diabetes.Best wishes Wendybee :)
