I have been on Levemir and Novorapid since August 2014. My glucose levels are quite high even if I don't eat much. I have asked the nurse to change insulin. My skin also seems to be affected with these. The nurse has suggested Lantus for long acting. Is this good and what are people using for short acting?

Some people struggle with Levemir as a long acting and are good with Lantus. I was the other way around.

I would recommend changing only the Levemir at first. If your basal isn't working properly then you will struggle with the bolus.

You may find that swapping Levemir for Lantus results in a lot better control and ultimately better glucose levels. If this still causes you issues then look at either Humalog or Apidra as fast acting insulins.

I was on lantus for several years with very few issues, you should also ask if you could try Tresiba which is a new basal insulin which was brought out in 2013, there's a few people on the forum who use Tresiba and the feedback is very good.

It does sound like the problem is the Levemir, you should definitely get someone to change it for you although I can't really recommend a different one I'm afraid (I've only been on Levemir). I use Novorapid for my fast acting and don't seem to have any problems with it.

Yes, the rule of thumb is to change one thing at a time. That way you can identify what makes the difference.

Before you change have you done all the obvious things? Are you carb-counting with NovoRapid and using the right ratio? Have you balanced the Levemir to match your background insulin needs? Are you having a sensibly low-carb diet? Although some people do react differently between Lantus and Levemir for many the results appear to be similar

A lot of people are on lantus twice daily so keep that in mind, at bed and again in the morning. I'm on 14 units prebed and 10units in the morning, novo rapid for meals.

I would try and get your Levemir adjusted correctly and if you still have issues then think about a change........

Lantus is as good as Levemir but even though it can be split in to a pre-bed and morning, its not marketed to behave that way....

having a pre-bed and morning dose of background allows for much more flexibility with illness or exercise etc....

it sounds like a basal issue if your not eating many carbs but are still high......

Yeah I struggled on Lantus since it was only lasting 16-18 hours for me and it blew away any energy I had.

Levemir, I am on 2 doses a day and am great with that, also it seems to allow me finer control with quicker turn around unlike Lantus which seemed to take a few days to settle.

But as Tim said at the start, it works for some any not for others.
