Levemir

I have recently changed from Lantus to Levemir in the past fortnight. I was on 15 units of Lantus daily at 8pm which worked very well so I took the same amount with Levemir. I now know that the Levemir is running out at around 6pm and my BG is low in the morning.

Would it be better to do a split dose and how do I know what times/amounts to take?

Any suggestions would be extremely grateful thank you.

Hi ishjohno, is your BG low in the morning or high?
When I swapped to Levemir my morning BG was high as the Levemir had run out.
I spoke to my doctor and DSN about how much to split the doses, originally it was one in the morning than another 16 hours later and the doses were more in the morning and less in the evening, that didn't work for me, but I generally try to take mine 12 hours apart and I take even doses of 30 each time. But that's what works for me.

It's always low so am thinking of dropping to 14, I'm just not sure what amount to take and at what times, thanks for the quick reply.

I switched from Humulin I to Levemir, the difference is amazing. My morning blood sugars are much lower and I require less Insulin.

I split my dose, 7am in the morning and 9pm in the evening. This wasn't what my doc suggested as such, but he's been pretty good and told me to experiment a little and find what works well for me. I take 14 units in the morning and 16 in the evening. I find my blood sugars like to increase a fair bit over night.

To be fair I've always used split doses, just seemed like a better way to do things as I read not all Insulins last the full 24 hours as suggested.

Hi!
I'm both a diabetic and a MD.
My advice: if the insulin dosage otherwise suits you well and only the morning glucose is low, before bedtime eat extra 3-4 teaspoons of cheese. You will note that your morning blood sugar will rise. If the blood sugar is then too high, reduce the number of teaspoons. If it's still too low, increase the number of teaspoons of cheese. Please let me know about the results.
Best wishes. :)
