Likelihood of diabetes

Hi, this is my first post on behalf of our 9 year son. Just looking for a little advice really.

My son had increased urination over the weekend and at school on Monday. Took him to the doctors and found glucose in urine. He had bloods done this morning after fasting since last night and we are awaiting results. However his urine this morning showed no glucose when tested (first wee of the day). Is it possible to have diabetes and no glucose on fasting urine? He seems to urinate more in the afternoons and evening after meals. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
 
Yes, it's possible, although diabetes usually comes on more quickly in children. When I first got it, my blood sugar before lunch was fine. However, after breakfast it was high. My consultant said that I still had a few islet cells left (that make insulin) but my body was responding too late and struggling to keep my blood sugar down. Before it was discovered, I'd felt ill and 'not right' for a while. My blood sugar in the morning was ok too, as long as it was tested before breakfast.

I have Type 1 diabetes.

All I can suggest is to wait for the results of the blood tests and then discuss the way forward with your doctor. If the results are normal, but you still feel something isn't right, then persist until you get an answer. My diabetes took a while to be diagnosed and I ended up quite I'll, so it's better to keep an eye on things and, if necessary, get help as soon as you can.

I hope your son is ok.

Edited to add - I also lost a big amount of weight over the space of a week or two as it got worse.

Thanks so much for your help. He is very slim anyway and don't know if he has lost weight. This only started with frequent urination on Saturday. He is not drinking too much and otherwise seems well, maybe a little more tired than usual. Do you know if glucose can show as just a one off occurrence? We will await the results as see what happens. Thanks again
 
I don't know if glucose can show as a one off occurrence. I'd guess it could be possible. As I understand it, people have a slightly different threshold for glucose spilling into the urine anyway. The blood tests should be more accurate now the urine has highlighted a possible problem.

My weight loss was very noticeable because i lost fat off my face and I've never had a fat face anyway, so my eyes looked hollow. That's what alerted me. I also felt very tired, like I had no energy at all in my muscles. I thought at first I might have anaemia. It was that kind of exhaustion that definitely wasn't natural.

Hiya, my son is 5 and was diagnosed in Feb. We noticed he was drinking and passing a lot of urine for a week or so before we checked his blood sugar (would of done it sooner but he had a ear infection so we thought it may of been that) as we have a meter in the house with his dad being type 1. His blood sugar was 26. We took him to hospital straight away. We caught his diabetes extremely early (may or may not be the case with your son) and he was admitted to hospital 11pm the thursday night and at his check friday morning his blood sugar was normal. because it was soo early on in the diagnosis he was still producing quite a bit of his own insulin so he was normal by morning. im no expert but maybe this is why his first wee of the day was ok? Usually with the frequent toilet trips comes thirst in my experience though.

I would defo persist and asked for more tests if you are not happy. You could always pop to a pharmacy or a&e and asked them to check his blood sugar just by pricking his finger. You will have a instant answer. If it is diabetes and goes undiagnosed they can get pretty poorly very quickly. So it maybe would be a good idea, even if just to rule it out.
 
Also...it was evenings Ryan would start with the drinking and going to the toilet a lot. He would be ok during the day and we totally well in himself. A little tired and very hungry!!
 
Ah thank you for your reply. Sounds just like our sons symptoms. Hopefully we will get some answers tomorrow from his blood test. Just hope we have caught it early and he could be controlled more easily. Best wishes to you and your son. Thank you ☺️

Catching it early just prevents him becoming unwell with ketones. It still can be hard to manage because eventually your honeymoon period comes to an end.

I hope for you and your son it isnt diabetes and maybe just some sort of virus that will go away. But if it is, me and lots of other mams are here to talk to if you ever have questions or even just so you dont feel alone. Its helps me a lot talking to people on here as in 'real life' i dont know anyone with a child who is diabetic. It can be a real comfort if you are feeling frustrated or even a little down.
