Hi all

After feeling quite ill on Metformin for a long time now, ill as in feeling sickly and unable to eat very well. My GP and Nurse have prescribed Linaglyptin for me today. This is not a drug I have seen mentioned much and I wondered whether any other members have any experience of it?

Hi and welcome. First have you been using Metformin (plain) or Metformin SR (Slow Release)? The latter is much kinder. Linagliptin is one of the Gliptin family of which Sitagliptin is quite common. These are called DPP-4 inhibitors as they suppress an enzyme that in turn switches insulin production off after a meal. This means you get extended insulin after a meal. I was on Sitagliptin for 3 years. They have few side effects but one or two serious but rare ones. Worth having if you don't have too much excess weight. If you do have excess weight then the gliptin may not do much and Metformin SR together with a low-carb diet is the best approach?

Thank you very much for your reply. I was on Metformin SR 1000 and finding that whilst I was keeping my sugars in check I was feeling unable to eat sensibly, for example, I would prepare a sensible meal, protein veg etc. and on sitting down to the meal I would go totally off it, could not face it, very like the nausea of pregnancy (I am not pregnant by the way lol) this was starting to spoil my life and that of my family too watching each meal be wasted. I would then reach for something I could stomach, usually carbs such as toast which I know is wrong but needed to eat something. This is why the GP and Diabetes Nurse have come up with this new drug Linagliptin and we (my health professionals and I) have agreed to try until end Sept and then have a blood test and review. yes, I am a couple of stone over weight. I do not eat to excess but find it harder to exercise due to severe arthritis of the knee.

All gliptins reduce the spike you get from your food.
I suspect your insulin resistance is high and because of that your body is storing it as excess body fats, which means that you have increased weight over time.
What the inhibitors do is take the sting out of the spike and that reduces the need for more insulin to be produced. Less insulin less weight gain.

What I would suggest is that you reduce your carbs slowly until your body adapts to low carbing, reduce your plate size, as portion control is important. And do a little bit more exercise however you can with your arthritis!
Even something easy lying down or sitting!
It will all help!
