Just asking for a bit of advice. Saw diabetic nurse last week. My blood sugar was down from 13 when last tested to 5.9 after eating. They don't supply metres now but rely on average three monthly blood tests which are apparently very accurate. Are there many people here who do not test. She did say you could get a bit obsessive about it and I probably would but on the other hand how do you know shat suits you if you do not test. I am trying the lc diet and havd lost nearly two stone since I was diagnosed a couple of months ago so must be doing something right. I should be very glad to hear of peoples opinions. I would also like to thank all the lovely people on here. I am so glad I found this site. Whenever I am feeling down I come on here and read other peoples stories and it does help. I do miss my ice cream though!

I agree you can get a little "obsessive" about testing, and sometimes I do ask myself why ? When I knew what the result would be anyway.

However, to get to the point where my fasting and post meal levels were predictable took time, experiments and testing.

If you can get good control without testing, then more power to you, but I know I would not have achieved my results in such a short space of time without it.

HI
For me testing has been really helpful and shown me what I can eat and what I should avoid. As each of us is different I have found some things like ice cream that I can eat in small quantities but I wouldn't suggest that without testing. It may be that now I have a lot more control and am trying out more foods. I didn't have any ice cream for many months after diagnosis but do very occasionally now. If your blood sugar readings that you quoted are HbA1c results that is a fantastic reduction in a short time so what you are doing is working really well for you. I am at the stage of not needing to lose any more weight so need to find extra foods that I can eat so testing is still helping me. Yes I am a bit obsessive about testing but I do like to react quickly if I make mistakes and think 6 or 12 months now to my next HbA1c is too long to wait.

I don't test. I don't like the thought of pricking my fingers half a dozen times a day, and I don't want to become obsessed about temporary spikes. I know I will almost certainly be having temporary spikes after some things I eat, but I think I know what I should and should not be eating generally.
My HbAic did come down from 49 at diagnosis to 44 at three month test, so I think I am going in the right direction. Perhaps if I had tested and avoided things which spiked me my reading would have been lower, but I am happy with my progress. If my HbAic had gone up I would have started testing.
You are doing well with the weight loss and lower BG level. And you are getting tested every 3 months which I think is good. My GP told me I would not need to be tested for another 12 months. I would prefer to have 3 monthly tests.

I found testing very beneficial and helped me to know what food spiked me

I've found testing very useful and wish I had done so from the very start when my bs was very high but I didn't realise how high. You can get obsessive about it and you only need to test often enough to know what foods affect you and how you are doing. After a few weeks of testing 2 hours after a meal you may find testing once very few days is enough if your bs appears stable.
