Local U3a Diabetes Talk Today.

A bit embarrassed to be a trained DUK presenter - although they haven't found me any speaking gigs yet.

The training didn't seem to reflect the presentation described, but a great deal will always depend on the knowledge of the presenter. You basically get a video, some slides, and training in how to present. Not a lot of detailed training about diabetes.

I really should try and scare up some speaking gigs locally, although the first one has a DUK staff member present as support and I suspect that they might be wary about giving me a second gig. :woot:

I was involved in a newly set up local DUK group for about a year but the awareness and knowledge was patchy and the committee had some issues so I ended up quitting.

Note to self: check out U3A for talks/groups.

Edit: contacted my local U3A (I am a member) to offer a talk or to lead a discussion group. We shall see.

Have you thought how you would approach diet in your presentation? Low carb and not being concerned about fat is still very controversial and may be quite shocking to your audience, depending how open minded they are. I am reminded that my DN, who is a low carb enthusiast, told me that many of her patients thought the idea of not eating bread or potatoes was ridiculous and it was her job to treat them rather than having to change their diet.

This is why I thought I might not be offered a second gig. :-)

My view is that I present the official DUK line then say that I don't follow all of it it personally.

Then offer Q&A stressing that the views are mine.

the guy doing the presentation had to follow the DUK script and not give his own ideas, because i asked him afterwards about low carbing and he said he couldnt say anything about that, even though he knew it was a good thing from the things others had said after talks he had given.

I really should try and scare up some speaking gigs locally,

A friend of mine has given talks to the U3A and now gives talks to the Women's Institute. Once he had been vetted by the county WI officials he then received dozens of requests to give his talk, based on his book Bagels and Bacon (his upbringing in the Jewish part of the East End of London post war). He's actually got something like 80 gigs organised up to and including 2020. On the strength of that he's managed to get a gig on a cruise ship although his repertoire is now 10 talks on everything from trains to Churchill to his book.
