In the US sugar and corn (and hence high fructose corn syrup) production are highly subsidized by the government. This is due to industry lobbying efforts.

There, US have shares in sugar.

Well they got it quite wrong in my case, as I've had ten years worth of pension before their high carb diet finally caught up with me...But possibly they'll save on the cost of amputations, etc, as I may be dead before I need carving up? (My cheerful thought for today)
