Just got diagnosed with type 1 and It's so depressing cos everyone who knows about me don't know how to handle it so they look and treat me like a sick person and the ones who do know about diabetes act like they don't know anything about me cos they're afraid to talk about it with me cos they're afraid I'll freak out, so I'm left alone :-(

Hi,

You will come to terms with your diagnosis. You have only been diagnosed for a few days and your feelings are all over the place at the moment. Once you get to grips with how to manage it you will feel more confident and will be able to explain to people how it affects you.
Having diabetes is hard to come to terms with but there are plenty of people here who live a full life and are healthier in many ways once they manage it. You will have good and bad days but eventually it will become easier to accept. and it will not be a barrier to friends, they will accept you for who you are. Don't think of yourself as a diabetic but as a person withe diabetes who is still the same person they were before diagnosis.

This article might explain how we are affected by a diagnosis.

HI. Yes, it's hard at first. I've been diabetic for 10 years of which the first 9 were on tablets and a low-carb diet and the last year on insulin together with a low'ish carb diet. I assume you are or will be on a Basal/Bolus (24hr & Rapid insulin) regime. I discreetly inject my rapid normally at the restaurant table and if I'm with friends it gives the opportunity to discuss and explain what Type 1 db means. I try avoid high-carb foods other than by exception so again when asking about food it's another opportunity to explain what it's all about. I've found most people are interested and like to be informed. Although taking insulin is a nuisance you do get used to it and in many ways I can tell you it's better than being a T2 just on tablets as a T1 can to a reasonable extent eat what they want. You will be surprised how many others are db; mainly T2 of course so you are not alone. Do come back with any questions.

Hi,
im sorry you feel this way, you are definately not alone, we are all here for you, ask as many questions as you can on here and keep your chin up

Yes we feel you so much...it s very weird...but thanx to technology everything can become better
For example in a greek forum where i am a member too,we arrange some appointments from time to time and we talk about diabetes and the way we face it....

You can start organise sth like this....!!!Start from now-make a new thread and invite people to your city or their city to see how many things you ll have to say...
I wish you a good start..!!!:)

Its not an easy journey as a diabetic or as a parent of one. Try to accept that your emotions will be all over the place at first but have faith in yourself. Dont .be scared to ask as many questions as you want, thats what the professionals are there for and id encourage you to join a support group and search out a counsellor in your local area who is versed in chronic illness. it helps so much to be able to talk to someone who isnt judging you or treating you with kid gloves!!it is a massive learning curve, emotionally and medically. Just take baby steps like you are learning to be a new you. Best wishes.

I know how you feel. I got diagnosed type 1 about 2 years ago and I'm still struggling to get it under control. I have some also been diagnosed as epileptic about 6 months ago. I have many days were I feel severely depressed and ask myself what's the point. But I get through them just take things one day at a time try and think of little things each day that make you feel happy sometimes it really is just those little moments that help and if you ever want to talk about it we have all been there just come on here you can message me anytime.
