Long Term Diabetic needing advice please

Hi all

I'm new to the forum even though I have had Type 1 Diabetes for many years (More than 30 anyway :-)!) and I'm just after some advice if anyone can help please. I visited my dentist yesterday and after many years of being told I had Geographic Tongue he now says he thinks it's Leukoplakia - which can be pre-cancerous. I've tried to google it and frightened myself to death of course but I did read that diabetics are 3 times more prone to getting it. Just wondered if anyone had it and if so could give me some info please?

Thanks

Hi Robbo
You are right about frightening !!!!

I trawled around a bit and found a more balanced and user friendly site which better explains the condition and lists symptoms and treatment. It does not sensationalise the issue.......the Mayo Clinic.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/leukoplakia/DS00458

Leukoplakia usually isn't dangerous, but it can sometimes be serious. Although most leukoplakia patches are benign, a small percentage show early signs of cancer, and many cancers of the mouth occur next to areas of leukoplakia. For that reason, it's best to see your dentist if you have unusual, persistent changes in your mouth.

If concerned you may need to see an Oral Specialist in such disorders rather than just a Dentist.

Hiya

Thanks for responding so quickly. Im awaiting an appointment with specialist but just trying to look for myself - wish I hadn't bothered!!! Having looked at what it looks on the web my tongue doesn't have the white scaley patches that's dexcribed. I have what looks like thrush - but doesn' scrape off and also comes and goes - strangely depending on where I am in my monthly cycle! and also a strange patch on the end of my tongue that looks like Geographic Tongue but hasn't disappeared for about 3/4 weeks.

Any other info would be greatly received :-)!

Thanks

I'm afraid I am just a 'simple' Diabetic and can't really offer any other help or advice. I would be inclined to leave it to the Specialist. I've had Oral Thrush in my time but it certainly doesn't sound like that. Doesn't sound nice whatever it is !

Let us know how you get on.

Hi and welcome,
I am also a long term T1 (36yrs). I was a dental nurse and i haven't heard of that, but my friend was a hygienist so i will ask her and get back to you.
Take care

Tracey,
Robbo's post was dated 10 Nov 2010 which was when she last visited so I don't thinks he will see your answer. Thanks for the reply though.
