Hi, I have just been diagnosed type 1, and I know it's very early on, but I was enquiring about a pump once I have done the DAFNYE course etc, my team in the hospital are telling me that's years down the road. I am 35, and just wondering how long other people waited

Bit of a lottery regarding pumps, and will much depend on local authority funds. luckily, got a pump after 21 months ish after diagnosis.

As newly diagnosed you have a lot to discover, I cannot give you an easy answer but I would expect that your hospital team will first want you to go on the dafne course and then see evidence that your using what you have been taught. After this (could be up to a year or more) they will then assess how well your managing the diabetes before they consider you for a pump.
I'd guess in my case it was a year after I'd done the dafne course before we'd agreed I'd try a pump, then another 4 months before I'd got up and running. Also bare in mind I'd also been IDD for 40+ yrs so had learnt all about how to manage myself already.
Hope this gives you some idea, your hospital should be able to give you a better view and maybe they will do this while your on the dafne course.

I was diagnosed as Type 1 14 years ago and have been on a pump for nearly 6 years. I lived in Kent when I first tried and was told to sign up for a DAFNE course first. I had moved to Essex by the time they organised that. Essex was much more interested but I hade to meet the NICE criteria. I got the pump because they had difficulty matching my background insulin requirements. We tried different insulins, different times of day and splitting the dose. The pump solved the issue immediately. I wouldn't go back!
In the States people get put on pumps almost straight away.
It is the usual health lottery.
