hi, i am currently taking janumet twice a day ,max dose and 1000 mg of glucophage as well, i am suffering from constipation and weight gain which i shouldnt be i know . i am thinking of asking the doc to put me on victoza as i heard its a good alternative and people loose weight on it ,i havent lost any weight on glucophage and if i even stray slighty from my diet the weight quickly piles on, what i would like to know is what side affects are associated with victoza ,has anyone had any problems with it ,am i making the right decision in asking for it and asking for glucopahge to be reduced to a more manageable dose or eliminated ,i dont understand why i havnt lost any weight with it at all ,can you get hypos with victoza ? i am at the stage where i am considering letting my blood glucose levels rise a bit to avoid any further weight gain ,not good i know ,so any advice would be appreciated .what other alternatives would i have that dont cause weight gain ?
janumet will increase insulin if glucose levels drop too low acording to label, wont that not increase weight gain ?
i really cant understand why i cant loose weight with these meds and why i have constipation (i can literally feel the weight going on )instead of the opposite like many others.

I would speak to your Dr or Diabetic Nurse.

Below is a thread on Victoza. Different side-effects for different people. I am on Victoza and I rave about it. However, I do suffer from bad constipation and take Laxido and senna. I have been doing Weight Watchers since August and have lost over 2 stone. I am on Metformin/Insulin/Victoza and over the past week have had three hypos - due to losing weight I am needing less and less insulin :-)

Are you expecting the meds to do all the work? You need to adjust your food and cut the carbs and portion size to achieve weight loss. Januvia or Sitagliptin (part of Janumet) is not supposed to promote weight gain.

Hi l am type 2 kept under control with diet, but l have given blood 3 times now and the last 2 times l have been unwell the third time l felt like l was going to pass out,l also suffer from high blood pressure when l got home and checked my blood it had gone low do you think l should stop giving blood

i have restricted my diet ,i dont expect the meds to do all the work, i have cut the carbs , what i cant understand is the rapid weght gain on these meds,i had consultation very recently ,yet he still increased my dosage desspite telling me my levels were very good ,
i have been in low 4,s before meals ,on the edge of going too low , i was hoping to get some advice here as i am not having much success with my doc ,example of meals :
breakfast :two coffee , one ryvita with butter or a piece of fruit, nothing else
lunch :turnip, peas in small portions approx 3/4 cup each one small potatoe ,salmon (the size of a weetabix)
evening meal:2 slices of wholemeal toast and butter with tinned salmon,
supper :piece of fruit or 2 ryvitas with peanut butter
i dont think i can eat any less to be honest, maybe there is something else wrong with me as well ,i dont know ,could i be on too much medication even ?
surely if i hadnt as much constipation i wouldnt be gaining weight as the food would be pasing through me ,im not a doc i dont know but i hope a doc or medic in here can give me some constructive advic please

Hi Tom!

I know the daily diet was just an example, but my feeling is maybe there is still too many carbs, and maybe not enough food in general? I agree you probably couldn't eat much less. Try adding some more fats (I know it sounds counter intuitive but give it a go). "good" fats like olive oil, nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, avocado, butter, full fat yoghurt. Some of the things you are eating are, if not high in carbs, maybe high enough to have it mount up over a day. I'm thinking of the fruit, ryvita, turnip peas and potato.

so are you suggesting i eat no fruit at all ? i have tried the yogurts and butter before only to find they increased my weight , i thought i was low enough on the carbs ,i think there is something else amiss here apart from my diet ,i shouldnt be gaining so much weight and be bloated to the point im fit to burst even before eating ,its not normal,i have siblings that dar diabetic and can eat a lot more than i can even look at ,im totally lost here but definitly considering droping some meds as problem only occured when i started them,i know the issue about rising numbers but i dont know what else to do.

I don't think that is what Finzi was suggesting at all. I cannot eat fruits apart from a few berries, you need to find out what works for you. I have found cutting out potatoes, I eat celeraic or mashed cauliflower instead. I don't have turnip, and I cannot touch things like Ryvitas as I have allergies and other health problems.

What about fluids? Are you drinking enough water? I certainly wouldn't say you shouldn't eat any fruit, berries like raspberries and blueberries are good. I dunno, just from the snapshot, the diet sounds kind of .... starchy? But if these problems have only started since you went on the new meds, and if your diet suited you fine before, then maybe you're going to have to pay another visit to your doc.

hi hun what youre eating is very carbohydrate packed. it will sit on you then if you dont work it off it will turn and work in with fat cells. you need more fibre and not so much startch. try prunes and lighter stuff too you need more than just carbs hun thats probably why your all bunged up. i hope this helps. xxxxx

Prunes are great for constipation but horrendously high in sugar (that's probably why!). My feeling as that the two things that Tom is short of (although to be fair it is hard to tell from a "snapshot") is above ground vegetables (cabbage, spinach, lettuce, peppers, aubergine, cucumber, courgettes, avocado, watercress) and fat (cheese, olive oil, sunflower seeds, cream, yoghurt, butter).

I fully appreciate that you have tried eating more fat and ended up putting on weight, but I think for it to work it has to be combined with low carbohydrate. High fat/high carb does put on weight. And to be fair, I'm not for a minute suggesting that your stated diet is *high carb* - it clearly isn't, relatively speaking, but it could be lower. And there's no magic to fruit, you can get all the goodness and more of fruit without the sugar levels from vegetables. As long as those vegetables aren't turnip, peas and potatoes. And Ryvita is not that much lower than bread. Maybe try to cut down on the number of those you're having? I keep looking at ryvita longingly in shops, but I always put it back - it's just too high in carbs for me to fit it in with my diet.

I had a problem with constipation recently (I posted a thread about it). I felt just like you describe. The things I did that fixed it were a) drinking tons of water (although strictly speaking I'm not supposed to do that because I'm fluid restricted) b) psyllium husk powder from Holland and Barrett and c) greatly upping my intake of great leafy vegetables and natural fats

But I still think that, if all this is a sudden issue and your diet worked fine for you before, perhaps it is your meds.
