My son hasn’t had the insulin he needs to eat for 4 days now. He still has his background dose. He’s been told at A & E to call Nhs24 they said they would call back within the hour, that was yesterday. Same carryon again today. Chemist also not picking up the phone. His libre was reading high then it was 27 now it’s reading 12. He’s vegetarian and only eating small amounts of quorn chicken and drinking lots of water. I’m 4 hours away from him and very concerned. How long can he keep this up? He says he’s not feeling to bad since his blood has lowered. Any input would be very much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. Sorry you've got this worry, and hope it gets resolved soon.

Has your son checked with a finger prick test what his blood sugar and ketone levels are, as Libre will not be accurate at high levels?

Which quick acting insulin does he use? I don't understand why A&E haven't given him emergency quick acting insulin. I think he needs to go back and sit there until they give it to him. Tell them 111 isn't getting back to him.

If he doesn't want to do that, ring 111 again and say it's an emergency!! If they don't respond within the time they said they would, he needs to keep ringing them until he gets his insulin.

Thank you for the reply. He uses fiasp hasn’t got a finger prick handy and hasn’t checked his ketone. He’s actually not being very helpful very crabit. If I wasn’t working tonight I’d be driving down.
Update ketones are 0.4

His long acting is tresiba , he’s been diagnosed for 6 years he’s 21 next week. I have a friend that can give him some but it will take a day in the post. It’s called Humalog Kwikpen. Will he be able to take that did this isn’t sorted by then. He’s been on hold to nhs24 for 2hrs . I’ve told him to hang up and try back. He’s doing that now.

As his blood sugars are high for an extended period of time, he needs to get to A&E, where he should be able to get insulin from an emergency doctor from the hospital pharmacy.

To be quite frank, he may loose his place in the queue on the line?

Though I can apreciate your son's position. I Was 21 once... ;)
You as a mum should not be put through this worry & concern.

Due to the way the seasonal holidays fall in the UK over the weekends? There does seem to be some extra days as a bank holiday? Even my time off work appears generous over the Christmas/new year period.

Did your son forget to order his script?

Ketones. Here is some NHS guidance on the subject. I'm doing this for you now, in relation to your concerns. @Sharon208 . https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/diabetic-ketoacidosis/

His blood reading is now staying around 12 it was 27 his ketone reading is 0.4. He never ordered his prescription . This is all his own fault! He was told yesterday nhs 24 would call back within an hour. They never. Today he’s spent now around 5 hours in total on two calls to nhs 24. Called A &E twice who keep referring him to nhs 24. Called boots they had no insulin in stock and his normal chemist it seems the phone is of the hook. Hopefully he can get into A&E tomorrow and get this sorted.
Thank you to all who have replied. Much appreciated

Hi @Sharon208. Just wondered how your son was today? Hope he managed to get his insulin and his bloods are back to normal.
