Hello everyone,

Having been advised by my diabetes team some years ago to purchase the Carbs & Cals book, which I duly did, I backed it up by downloading and paying for the app. It came in handy, especially when I was dining out or dining at friends or family.

Over the last few months, more if I'm honest, I've got fed up with many food being “locked”, and it's not exactly practical to take the book with me every time I go out, so I'm asking if any of you can recommend an app they will give me the carb content for any food depending upon its weight please. TIA

I use one called Nutra Chek Calorie Counter, but it does have carb counts too. There are plenty of commercially ready made foods and also ingredients. You can input the weight of how much of the product you’re using and it does the calculation for you.

I am looking for the same type of app but cannot really afford a monthly subscription. Is there a free carb counter app available that anyone can recommend?

Have used both Fat Secret and My fitness Pal over the years but I've just discovered Chronometer, it's absolutely amazing. Not only does it calculate fats/carbs/protein/cals it also breaks food down even their trace elements. I find it handy for electrolyte values. It's so easy follow once you go though a small learning curve.

I also record my biometrics through the app such as weight, blood glucose, BPM and oxygen in blood, there are more biometrics you can record.

There're even trend reports you can print.

All is free, but if you want more tools, like recording fasts you can pay a fee of about £45ish per annum.

These are all free apps though I can't honestly recommend any of them as I have not used them.
I use CarbManager it's pretty good and comes with a huge number of low carb recipes but does require a subscription for full functionality unfortunately.

Carb Counter - Calorie King RP. Health & Fitness.
Atkins® Carb & Meal Tracker. Health & Fitness.
Keto Diet App - Carb Genius. Health & Fitness.
Daily Carb. Health & Fitness.
Stupid Simple Keto Diet App. Health & Fitness.

Take care with these apps.
They are useful but you need to know if the data comes from the US or not.
In the US, the Total Carbs includes fiber. Elsewhere, it does not.
If you are using the app to calculate your insulin dose, this can be significant.

My preference is to learn what 10g of chips, pasta, peas, bread, crisps, etc. looks like and "eyeball" it.
Over the years, this becomes easier but I found the apps tedious and rarely had what I eat ... although being primarily veggie my meals are probably less traditional.

I also have the Carbs and Cals books and app, I also find it annoying that lots of things are now locked, however you can usually find an equivalent and use that instead (I take all of the numbers with a pinch of salt in any case), I also do what @In Response suggests, which is to just know how much is in a given meal.

There is an opensource app and data source called openfoodfacts (though as with typical early-stage opensource datasources it's still incomplete) and it only contains products you'd buy in a supermarket/grocery store rather than complete meals.
