Losing the will

Hi all,

I've stuck rigidly for 3 weeks to 800 cals maximum a day. On many days I've eaten considerably less. In the first week I lost 5 1/2lbs and thought I'd finally found something which was working for me. In week 2 I lost a further 1 1/2lbs in the first 2 days. However since then ie. the last 12 days I have yo-yoed up and down by about 2lb and I'm getting nowhere.

I added vitamin D3, calcium and magnesium supplements all to no avail so far.

I am losing the will! I've reached a point now where I no longer have any carb cravings which is great. But equally I have absolutely no enjoyment from eating anything at all. I don't know what to eat any more as there is nothing that appeals to me at all.

I am on a fair raft of meds and not sure if any of these are the problem? I'm on 80mg Nexium, 50mg metformin, 20mg Amytriptiline, 100mg Naproxen, 25mg Atirvastatin.

I have read that Nexium can cause all kinds of problems.

Just need a bit of a kick to keep going. Blood sugars generally in the 7s or high 6s, which haven't really changed much from before I started.

Any advice, support, words of wisdom gratefully received! I need t
O lose at least another 4 1/2 stone. Struggle massively with exercise to due a very damaged hip.

@summer dreamer , sorry to read your have such a bad time at the moment. 800 cals sounds very low. and will be difficult for me personally to stick to. I can only add that I have lost 5st in 18 months but eating the low carb high fat way of eating .. not counting cals. I had 20g of carbs a day, I am wondering if you are not getting enough fat in your diet .. if you eating low fat foods you will not lower your blood sugars. Good fats like olive oil and coconut oil are great to help with weight loss. If you could look through the LCHF forums you will see how well it works for lots of us.

Any reason for the really low amount of calls? Generally speaking i find a small daily calorie deficit will have better results in the long run. Also when eating too little for too long your body tends to go into starvation mode lowering your metabolism and probably will even go into fat storing mode rather than fat burning mode.

I'm not a big fan of the LCHF diet but don't have anything against it neither so you can give it a try if weight loss in your main goal. Just make sure you have all the macro en micro nutrients you need as this will help to keep the energy levels up and you wont feel drained so much. Losing weight doesn't need to be tiresome, you just need to be patient and go for steady long term results.

I went for the 800 cals as I've been following Michael Mosely's 8 week blood sugar diet. It's based on the Newcastle diet but with food rather than optifast.

The results he talks about in the book are amazing but just not happening for me. I do wonder if all my meds have seriously messed up my metabolism and absorption.

Another 4 1/2 weeks to go. I think I will try to see it through. If I get minimal results still by the end I will have to try to get in touch with the man himself and see what he suggests perhaps.

There isn't such a thing as one diet fits all, so it's not because it worked for someone else that it will certainly work for you. It's admirable that you're sticking with the diet but if you're not getting the desired results i would consider trying something different. As mentioned by @Enclave the LCHF diet is giving nice results and on a plus there are a lot of people knowledgeable about it on this forum.

On a side note i found that the only successful diets are the ones you can maintain for a long time or even indefinitely. That said i'm obviously not a fan at all of diets that last a few weeks or months as you are left to your own devices afterwards.

I hope you sort it out and wish you the best of luck with achieving your goal.

Hi @summer dreamer

Congratulations. By my count you have lost 7lbs so far which is not insignificant in three weeks. I can't help you with the meds question as I have only been on metformin. But if you are not feeling ill but just despondent because the results don't seem to be matching the effort I agree with you that you should carry on. It is not unusual to hit a plateau then one morning to see a couple of pound gone overnight. Good luck with whatever you decide and well done again on your weight loss to date
