Losing weight and hit a barrier.

I have been type 1 for 16 years and in 2012 i started to get serious problems because of my diabetes I.E severe neuropathy and loss of sight. Since 2012 i have managed to loose 6 stone going from 21 stone down to 15 but i have hit a brick wall and cannot seem to loose anymore weight. It is really starting to get me down and don't know what to do. I spoke to my diabetic nurse and she said please don't diet and eat more, especially carbs.

I have a bowl of cereals or slim fast milk shake for breakfast, slim fast milkshake for lunch and soup for main meal. I take 16 units of Humalin m3 in the morning and 10 units in the evening plus 1000mg of metaformin twice a day. I also take pain and antidepressants daily.

I do between 40 and 60 minutes a day on a exercise bike and two 2 minute walks also.

Any suggest would be really appreciated. Thank you.

Just checking that you haven't made a typo. You're definitely T1 not T2? It's just that I thought most T1s were now either on pumps or on long acting insulin plus short acting before meals....

Do you get many hypos?

Thanks for the reply, I’m definitely type one. I used to be on long and short acting insulin but my body was resistant to them so they stopped them. I don’t have many hypos maybe 1 a week.

What meds are you on and what are your blood sugars like, lovely?

Thanks for the reply. I’m on humalin m3 twice a day, 16 units in the morning and 10 units at night plus 1000mg of metformin twice a day. I also take prescribed pain and antidepressants.

My blood sugars are 6-7 sometime first thing in the morning they maybe 5 or just under.

Your morning levels sound perfect :)

Do you take a fast acting insulin with your meals? A bowl of cereal with milk would certainly need some.

How about blood sugars before and two hours after you eat?

Gosh, @TBSimon - You certainly don't seem to be eating much. On that basis your nurse may be concerned your body could have moved into starvation mode and slowed your metabolism.

If that's the case, then believe it or not, eating a bit more for a while can have the impact of almost reawakening your system.

As a non-insulin user, never mind having no experience of a mixed insulin, such as Humulin M3, I wouldn't advise you to alter your eating patterns too much, as your insulin requirements could well change.

Hi @TBSimon
Can I start by saying I don't have a clue abut T1 and that's enough in itself to stop my from offering any advice but I do have a couple of observations if there any help. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sound like your eating nothing but carbs from your post.
Cereal + milk = carbs with added sugar + carbs = sugar + sugar + sugar.
I just quickly double checked slimfast and the labels says 38 grams of carbs 20 grams of that is sugar per portion.
No idea about the soup, but they usually have hidden carbs and sugar if its store bought.

You can't be getting any enjoyment out of your diet , I would opt for eating real food that is good for you.:hungry:
I know its not as simple as this but if you don't give your body sugar it finds what its missing from breaking down you reserves of Fat to turn back in to energy to run the body. Thus weight loss.

Exercise.
People love to tell you that you don't get the benefit until you have been going for half an hour. That's nonsense.
It's like saying you put a light on and it doesn't cost anything for the first half hour.:banghead:

You do get a greater benefit in burning Fat by going faster over a short period. (greatly over simplified)
Say 20 mins cycling fast vs 1 hour at a steady pace. And both use the same amount of calories.
  • The 20 mins fast taps in to the bodys Fat supply for the quick burst of energy.
  • The 1 hour taps in to the Fat supply for the last 5 mins when your running low on energy
Eating after you exercise is better than before as the new food energy you put in wont get stored as fat but sent to feed the muscles. Especially protein meat, fish, eggs, cheese, nuts, ect...

The last thing to understand is muscles will continue to burn fuel up to 24 hours after you stop exercising.:bookworm:
The more muscles you use the more fuel you burn.
IF you can add push-ups, sit-ups, Yoga or Ti Chi for 10 mins a day into your exercise routing and still keep cycling, you will be using more muscles faster for less time.

Think of it like this every muscle does a little bit,
a little bit + a little bit + a little bit + a little bit + a little bit + a little bit + a little bit add up to one BIG BIT. ;)
