You could try full fat yogurt with berries. The yogurt from Lidl or Aldi is lovely - not sour. I bought some sugar free maple syrup from the low carb megastore, you only need a couple of tsp and the bottle lasts ages, I also use their tortilla wraps, I separate then freeze them. Homemade soup in a wide flask is good too.
Just salad is boring, but pop some seeds on - pumpkin etc. And use a nice olive oil, vinegar and mustard dressing.

That doesn't sound too bad! The yoghurt for breakfast? :)

Lol yeah it's my fault I know. I can't add in the exercise though without being in excrutiating pain! I have found the post in the Low Carb Forum The newbies guide! I am going to print that out and give it a go! Sorry though!
It's not a blame game Nicola. I didn't suggest anything is "your fault". Creeping weight gain is the easiest thing. I know this. Unfortunately, losing it tends to take more effort than gaining it, in most cases.

I'm pleased you feel more committed now, but it's not something for a few days, so whatever approach you decide upon, ensure you can, realistically, keep it for longer than a few days.

I know, sorry about that. And I do intend to keep it up for as long as possible, I think I just need to try and push my depression out of the way. As I am sure that makes a big contribution to what I eat etc!

Are you able to give any tips though??

I pretty much reduced my carbs and moved around a bit more. Testing before and after food, which you probably do anyway, helped me understand any foods that were particularly troublesome to me.

I know that sounds too simple, but it sums it up.

I see well I do try and walk as much as I can anyway not as much as I used to due to my sciatica. And the food diary does sound like a good idea then aha! I will do a bit of research and googling too!

Nicola have you heard of 'Mindfullness'? Google it, you can also download an app for it too. Its based on Buddhism, but its excellent to clear your mind, give it a go, the NHS are also using it in certain areas.

Hiya
I'm In a similar situation to you ,I have a pump and really want to loose weight! I have been doing low carb but am definitely no expert.I have started exercising even though I don't like it.I haven't seen any improvement which is annoying which makes me kind of want to give up ! I completely get the motivation thing! I'm going to see a dietician soon so will be interesting to see what she says. :)

Hello ah yes I am glad I'm not alone aha although I knew I wouldnt be but yeah, I don't even know where to start! I am presuming it isn't the same as when you have no carbs to basal rate test because I hate that, it's horrible!! If you don't mind me asking how much are you looking to lose? And what kind of things are you eating at the moment?? I have seen my dietician a few times but not so much help *sigh*

Hi again. I think you know it is about commitment plus trying to get around the lunchtime food problem which is the same for many. For breakfast porridge is not ideal so keep the portion size down. I have eggs and bacon. Could you have some combination of bacon, cheese, zero sugar yogurt? For lunch apart from the obvious salad, can you use thinner sliced whole-grain bread with thicker meat/cheese/tune etc filling? Have you looked at the Muller Yogurt label? The last one I looked at was full of added sugar. I have Irish Yogurts 0%/0% fruit yogurt. Set yourself a daily limit for carbs of, say, 150gm, read the labels and keep a diary if that helps. Obviously the pump will need adjustment to match.

My porridge is like a 30g pot I think...is that too much?? And as for the lunches I am sure I can look about and experiment etc! :) Isn't bacon really fatty though?

If you are going to try low carb then you need to increase the fat in your diet so you feel full. Otherwise it's just a low calorie diet and those are really hard to stick to.

As a T1 on any kind of diet you will need to reduce your total insulin, progressively, otherwise you will struggle with hunger feelings and either snack, or have hypos and eat carbs for them.

Is it? I just always assume that's normal if that makes sense I dont know lol!

And I am 5 ft 11 and weigh about 13 stone but get told I carry it well! and ideally I want to be atleast 10st again or even 11st!

Probably impossible though.....I have sciatica too :(
A little bit off topic but do you mind if I ask how you came to have sciatica? Did you damage your back in an accident/ car crash or was it from something less acute?

Back on topic though, I'd recommend you use a site like myfitnesspal or calorie king where you can imput your height, weight etc and track your meals with their large food databases and it'll count your calories and carbs for you, they also give you the number of calories per day you need to maintain weight and the number of calories you need to lose weight. This is a good place to start and from there you can decide if you want to take advantage of reducing carbs etc.

Hey, nope no car accident or anything! I have no clue what I have done to have got this! I thought it was because I had injected funny at first but obviously I was wrong! :( But I did have a foot ulcer at one point which was causing me to walk a bit funnily too! :/

And I sometimes use myfitnesspal! :)

Hi Nicola Anne, I spent about 10 years struggling with weight and not knowing what to do (and thinking reducing carbs was an impossibility)... Only in the last 6 months have I really changed my habits and way of thinking and I'll tell you one thing- it's nothing to do with committing to eating less and exercising more, if it was that easy I'd have done it years ago. My problem was my thought processes- a) I felt like it was just not possible to eat a low carb diet, that I was incapable of it because I wasn't strong enough (depression and low self-esteem played a big part in this) and b) I didn't even WANT to go low carb. This didn't mean I didn't want to be healthy, of course I did! But I was so angry and upset about being diabetic (as someone who doesn't drink or smoke or rebel in any way in life, it felt like doing everything you're supposed to do and getting punished for it anyway), that the idea of having to give up the one good thing I really appreciated as a form of comfort- my love of food like bread, pasta, cakes, chocolate, sweets etc etc just seemed unimaginable to me. It sounds dramatic but I literally felt like "well what is there left to live for?!" (Again, depression was a huge part of the problem here)... Anyway the best thing you can do to help yourself is to get some therapy. It might take a bit of trial and error to find the kind that works for you, I feel like I've tried a bit of everything haha but eventually hypnotherapy is what helped me. It made me WANT to eat healthier food, and once I stopped seeing high carb food as treats I wished I could have, but really shouldn't, the will power came naturally. I now see high carb food as food that makes me feel like ****, and that's enough to keep me from wishing I could eat it.
Another thing I did that really helped was to keep a mood mapping diary, and start adding what I was eating in to it. This basically involved plotting on a graph, my energy level and mood level on a scale of 1-10, 1 being no energy or negative mood, 10 being high energy or positive mood, at the same time everyday. Say for example 9am everyday for a week. Then changing the time to say 12pm and doing that for a week too. You didn't have to overthink it and specify whether you were angry or sad or whatever, just work out the feeling you have, no matter how silly you might feel it is, or why you think it is. I started plotting pre, post and 2hours post high carb foods (particularly sugary foods) and found that there was a VERY clear pattern of bad moods following the high carb foods, and my cravings for comfort food actually followed the post high carb low mood, not life stresses. It seemed that my moods were CAUSED by the food, not that I was treating moods caused by life with food if that makes sense. Anyway, seeing all of this in black and white also helped me to alter the way I thought about high carb food- I really began to believe that I could change it so that really helped.

If you'd like any more info, or just someone to have a moan to when you're struggling, pm me if you like :)

Good luck with everything,

Sarah
