Low carb & Asthma

Have any of you found low carb improves your asthma condition ?

Our friend (74) has bad asthma; (not diabetic, but wheat intolerant & with high cholesterol) still has plenty of carbs, & a very low fat diet. It's not helping, & the statins cause a range of problems, but she's afraid not to take them. (She's tried several, & they all give muscle pains & cramps, so she takes quinine as well....)

I have no idea but can give my personal experience - I don't low carb but stick to between 100 - 130g carbs a day

I started with asthma about 8 yr ago that was triggered by a fungal spore beneath some wallpaper we stripped in an old house. It was quite bad and often needed steroids to help me out.

When I was last at my DN nurse she said it was flagged up on the computer that I had missed 18 months of Asthma clinic - I said I hadn't had any trouble with it and she said "but you had new inhalers a couple of months ago - "that was because my others has gone out of date" I said - we worked out that I hadn't taken my blue or brown inhaler for over 18 months she did a puffer test and it was spot on.

Now whether this was down to my reduction in carbs or my 7st weight loss and generally healthier lifestyle I have no idea - I never really put it down to the carbs reduction though - but you never know :?:

My youngest lad came off his inhalers about 2 years ago, he keeps going back for the puffer test every 6 months but so far so good. I put his coming off the inhalers down to fitness, he is very sporty and plays football every weekend for his local club, I also try and encourage him to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and warn him of the perils of smoking. Asthma can come and go in life, and we were warned to keep checking his peak-flow every few months, more so in the winter months, but hopefully he has seen the last of this condition.

Glad your son is doing well Nigel- and listens to his dad :wink: - I tend to agree with you that it is probably a healthier way of living and the weight loss that is the contributing factor - the lower carbing being all part of that - the holistic way of life that I think a lot of us hear agree with :)

There is an indication that a reduced carb diet would be beneficial in this link.

What should an asthmatic eat? What is a proper diet to make an asthmatic healthy? There is no mention of diet or food in 146 pages of the official Guidelines, from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

My question derives from the tremendous benefit I have found with reduced carb, & I wondered whether it would help other chronic conditions, particularly my friend with asthma.

Can statins aggravate asthma?
