Low-carb but high uric acid?

I just came back from a series of test to check my heart palpitations. The doctor didn't see anything obvious that could directly cause palpitations, so the implication seems to be that it's more related to my diet change (been a month since I started moderate low-carb) and bodily adjustments.

My blood test came back a bit high on uric acid, and the doctor said a low-carb diet has a tendency to cause it. So essentially I'm told that I'm at a risk of developing high blood pressure. I wasn't diagnosed as having gout since I have no joint problems. The doctor also suggested that I could simply be not eating enough, causing elevated levels.

Anyone has a similar experience? It seems that I should eat less meat and more veges.

Hi, if I was you I would make sure you are drinking plenty of water as this helps to flush uric acid. I used to be prone to gout attacks but since going lchf I haven`t had one in well over a year so I am a little sceptical of lchf causing high uric acid levels. Best of luck anyway, Chris.

I could be in a similar position - the low carb diet having brought on my first attack of gout. I was dagnosed T2 about a year and a half ago and since then have changed and changed my diet to get the carb levels down - and increasing my protein intake has been a big feature in that. Also, the protein has been more meat than I used to eat (was vegetarian for a big chunk of my younger life), and more oily fish - all sorts of things which are high purine level foods, so the worst possible diet for a potential gout sufferer. But I've also developed a bunion and gout will tend to attack a joint already damaged in some way. So it's a combination of problems for me - including working out a new sort of diet!

I am prone to the odd bought of gout (started be my T2) I take cherry tablets to help stop it .. seems to work for me

I just finished watching a video that is part of the keto summit and it talked about this. They said that a low carb or keto diet will cause uric acid levels to rise at the 4-6 week in mark, after a few more weeks the levels will drop back to baseline or even below. It is supposedly part of the change over to burning fat for fuel. I don't know if that will be true in your case but You might want to wait another month and get your levels checked again.

Certainly not the case for me. I was diagnosed T2 about 18 months ago, and the decreasing amounts of carbs in my diet has been something I've done over the year and a bit since then. I've only just finished a month's medication for my attack of gout and am due more blood tests in a couple of week's time, including HbA1c, so I'll see more then about where I'm now at.

The high uric acid levels - hyperuricemia - are also the result of drawing a short straw in your genes. My father had attacks of gout from his 30s and my sister also has high uric acid levels though has never had an attack of gout (but is not a meat-eater, which will be helping).

Have you seen this thread @debrasue ?
I think Uric acid has caused my arthritis.
Hmmm, that's interesting... I can't claim it's caused my arthritis, as it's something I first developed about 20 years ago, but it may be making it worse. And it could certainly explain why my other half has been experiencing more attacks of gout.
(Oops! :wideyed: Don't tell him - I'll change the menu....!)

Unfortunately the Uric acid will do that - it caused my sister's gout due to her being on Beta blockers. I'm still amazed her useless doctor actually picked up on it!

This is interesting, thanks. I saw my urologist yesterday and he said my pre-op bloods in the summer showed a urate level of 359 (in a normal range that goes up to 360). For a few weeks pre-op I went keto for weight loss. He thinks my raised level may be metabolic as I don't eat a high purine diet so your post might explain what he was talking about. He suggests I drink plenty of water, drop some more weight and keep the beetus on a tight leash.
