Low Carb Cat?

Hi, does anyone feed a low carb diet to their cat?
We have a new kitten and he's had diarrhoea on and off since we had him 3 months ago. The vet put him on a high fibre food but that didn't help and I begrudge paying more consultation fees and wasting yet more expensive food.
Searching the net I found 2 answers, high fibre(which hasn't worked) and low carb.
At the moment he is eating only steamed fish which is proving expensive as he's eating more each day.
Anyone feed their pets low carb economically? Any commercial foods that anyone knows of that aren't bulked out with cereal?

jahusba - we feed all our cats and dogs a low carb diet, as natural as possible.
We feed fresh meat with some veggies, egg yolk and liver once a week, get various off cuts from butcher and fish monger, sometimes the commercial food listed below.

If your kitten has a sensitive tummy, presume it has been wormed right? Try giving it barley water, just boil some barley for 30 mins, let it cool, add a small spoon of manuka, can add fish liquor to that, encourages the cat to drink or try slippery elm tincture.

Yes he has been wormed, I think he just has a very sensitive tummy.

Raw feeding is probably the best diet for dogs and cats, as it natural way of doing things..
 
All but the most expensive manufactured pet food have been bulked out with fillers of the carbohydrate kind.
In the wild, your kitty would be eating raw meat and the odd bit of grass. It would probably still be feeding from mum occasionally too, until mum gets fed up!

You don't have to feed it expensive stuff at all. Most fishmongers/butchers would be very willing to give you/sell cheaply the offcuts and I know that pollock is £2 for two big bits in Tescos.

Hi I was just about to put my cat down after a year of him being sick after every meal, rubbling tummy and looking in pain, he also lost weight you could feel his spine. I had all the treatment at the vets endoscope both ends, all they found was an inflamed stomach. They advised their own vet food or chicken rice and fish, all to which never change his condition. Today he is looking 100% better and his started fighting with other cats again. I only feed him turkey breast and fat free beef all cooked in plain water or lightly fried, his put on weight coat looks healthy, I did give him fish but he was ill again. It can be expensive and time consuming I use slow cooked beef and chop in up small, freeze it in small portion the turkey is sainsburys basic £2.00 and do the same with that You will find that they feel more satified. occasionally I give then raw chicken, the vet said no, but they dont cook the mouse before eating it and they go crazy for raw meat.

I used to have a Wolfhound with a very sensitive tummy. Instead of commercial dog food he had raw minced tripe, which you can buy frozen in packets from good petshops. To feed a cat you'd need to somehow cut the frozen packs into halves or quarters still frozen, so you could thaw them out in small bits.

It's not disgusting or smelly, it is quite cheap, and in my experience both cats and dogs love it! Just thaw it out and feed it raw.

An Irish Wolfhound with diarrhoea has to be experienced to be believed :shock:

I fed my cat raw meat for 6 years. She had a skin condition when I rehomed her and was on steroids. After a year, it cleared up and she was fine without drugs. I gave her mostly cheap mince beef or mince lamb/mutton with weekly bits of heart, liver and an assortment of leftovers. She loved cream.

His diet is going well and his tummy has settled. I've been busy reading up on raw feeding (B.A.R.F.)There's lots of info out there and raw feeders seem as passionate about it as we Low Carbers are about our way of eating. (Must admit tho, so far have been browning his meat :shh: )

Good to hear he is doing better! I fed low/no carb food to my cat when she developed diabetes. I learned (too late) that cats should never be fed carbs - some commercial cat food has up to 40% carbs. The perfect food for a cat is actually a mouse. Not that I recommend a staple diet of them, but it gives you an idea of the right fat/protein/other ratios. The feline diabetes epidemic is widely believed to be due to dry food/kibble and other high carb cat foods. Treatment with steroids can also sometimes trigger feline diabetes.
