Hi I am newly diagnosed with type 2 and since my diagnosis 5 weeks ago I have been taking very few carbs ie no fruit and doing Atkins diet .phase 1 .
I took a blood glucose reading yesterdayfor the first time ......... before food and it was 1.8 mmol yet I felt ok.....
I then ate an apple baked beans and sausages ( I wouldnt normally eat the apple or beans but I was worried about low sugar) and two hours later my sugar had risen to 4.2.
Does anybody know if this is ok for someone on a low carb diet or are my sugars too low.
I also wonder if as I am burning ketones due to the low carb diet then this makes up for the low blood sugar
I am also on 1500 mg of metformin..
regards
Dave

To be honest Dave I think your sugars are far too low. If you are getting a reading of 1.8 I'm surprised you've not gone 'hypo'. Are you sure your meter is calibrated correctly?

I also have suspicions about the 1.8 reading with no symptoms - I'd always test again if I got an anomalous reading like that.

If you're Type 2, not on insulin or a drug that stimulates production of insulin, and you're not having any symptoms of hypoglycemia, I'd be surprised if you really have anything to worry about. I think we all have homeostatic mechanisms that keep our BG under control as long as we're not bombarding our bodies with insulin/BG raising foods. I've seen unmedicated Type 2's on the forum who regularly have readings in the 4's and even 3's without issue. Different story if you take medication though.

Thanks for the replies guys...well I was feeling very tired, my nose is very cold a(unusual for me ) and my nephew said I was pale ... so maybe there are symptoms there... but no shivering or sweating etc...
I have eaten more food to be on the safe side .. and my body is now used to using ketones after 5 weeks of attkins ...as not type 1 so there is no insulin crash...but the readings surprised me... I have sent for another meter (the one advertised on this site) just to be sure...until I check it I will eat more carbs and put in another meal ...

regards
